I'd actually slightly favour a peak Tunney over a peak Ali.
He's one of very few I'd favour.
The Ali who fought Cooper, Chuvalo, Folley, showed the exact flaws I think Tunney could exploit.
Tunney would be more of a puzzle for Ali than Ali would for him, IMO.

Interestingly, I think Ali beats everyone as big or bigger than him, but I'd favour three or four smaller guys to beat him. Prime for prime.

    two questions for Tunney supporters:

    1. What 6'3 215lb heavyweight did Tunney ever fight?

    2. What black fighter did Tunney ever fight?

I don't think anyone embarrasses Ali but then again I don't think Ali would embarrass Gene. Tunney was a tough quick guy with very good power and smart. Ali had a better HEAVYWEIGHT resume but Tunney would be a tough fight for him. Ali had trouble with the smaller faster guys like Doug Jones, Henry Cooper and none of them in Tunney's calibur

Close decision......I will lean towards Ali but not surprised if Tunney wins ...well maybe a little...Ali always got the benefit of a close fight

Ali would win it...based on his size, weight and reach advantages mostly..if Tunney was bigger..it might have been a very different deal....sorry SonnyListonjab...but Tunney was a great fighter.

Good points. I'm a big Tunney fan but the guys he beat at HW dont give me enough reason to pick him over Ali.

Tunney is a great h2h lhw but i'm not sure about heavyweight. He did enough there to establish a legacy but not enough to say for sure he'd beat someone of ali's calibre.

Personally I think ali wins a very boring decision.

IDK , people say Tunney was that good , yet he was KOd by Dempsey , people still keep asking about what would have happened had he not retired , but he actually lost by KO to Dempsey.
Yet Ali sucked donkey balls on many occasions , cheating frequently and taking advantage of alcoholic whiteboyassskin sometimes , but still having the need for smelling salts.
I say , if Doug Jones did it , maybe Tunney could have too.
No disrespect for Jones whom had some other impressing (for a lightheavy) wins and even respectable losses.

Tunney was a great boxer back in his time but he wouldn't be much competition for Ali. Ali was simply too fast, large and mobile for tunney, who would be so confused that he would be at a loss of how to handle Ali.

Ali would outbox, outpunch and outclass tunney on the way to a late round tko. I do believe that tunney would be skilled enough to take the fight into the latter rounds but thats about it. He would lose nearly every round.
