If you're just getting into lifting weights Starting Strength is probably the best you could do. Even somebody with a few years experience could do well on that program.
I started a 5x5 basic strength program but recently been ill with man flu. Starting my program again and thinking of just using mark riptoes program for the basic strength phase and hopefully achieve a decent level of strength. Has anyone got a link or page with the full workout and program for his starting strength? Iv seen a couple of sites just want to make sure its the genuine program.
Im also trying to get reasonable goals to make. Does anyone know/ have links to research that will tell you for your bodyweight how much you weight you should be able to squat, press ect ect. I often see for example things written 1.5 x your body weight. Obviously looking to increase the weight in small increments every 1-2 weeks but want to know at what point a more advanced program will be needed ? cheers
Front Squat 1.5x BW Dead Lift 2.0x BW Bench Press 1.5x BW Increase the weight everytime you can successfully complete all reps two sessions in a row, there is no set time when you will need to change the program, your body will tell you by not progressing. Don't assume this means you need a more advanced program sometimes with strength you actually need to spend some time doing less rather than more, also something as simple as changing from bar to dumbell lifts can shake your body up to keep advancing.
stickied on bodybuilding.com on teen section this is a great workout and i would recommend to all beginners http://forum.bodybuilding.com/showthread.php?t=131379243
http://www.exrx.net/Testing/WeightLifting/StrengthStandards.html I am currently at an intermediate level on most of these lifts based upon the standards set in the link. I did variations of 5x5 routines for the last 2 years and have found it for me to be the best routine and have made steady progress. Once I reach a more advanced level I'd like to start mixing in more Olympic style lifts.
I was going to post that link :good I'm at the intermediate stage with my lifts too. It's a massive jump to get to the advanced stage, and I doubt I'll ever get there with any of my lifts. I'm actually thinking of moving towards getting fit rather than strong. I've been steadily putting on weight for the last few years (partly on purpose) but now my 32" jeans and work trousers are getting a bit too tight for my liking. It might be time for a year or so of getting myself a bit fitter and just doing a bit of maintenance in terms of weight lifting.
