These are the only vids I can find that shows Mark at his best. [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L-wYsSnCaCs&feature=related[/ame] [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ofNJ-CEvoxY&feature=related[/ame] Another video of him @ 1:18 [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v66vt0mVOE4[/ame] His fighting style is like Roy Jones and Pernell Whitaker mixed together. I've been wanting to learn more about this boxer for awhile now. How good was he in his prime @ Flyweight? And does anyone know where I can find some videos of "Too Sharp" at his top form?
I dont see him being defensively as good as those two...but offensively he was a marvel. Blistering handspeed, good technical ability and solid power for the weight. Atheistically he is one of the best flyweights Ive seen...Great athletic talent but he wasn't truly tested in his prime against the best around. Apparently the Jimenez fight exposed some flaws in him and could have gone either way. Though that was early in his career and Jimenez was no mug.
Mark Johnson HTH is the best Flyweight ive seen.. Big time power,Good chin, Slick when he wanted and very very fast.... Basically the whole package, only flaw was sometimes got hit more than he had too, but not cause he wasnt slick or have good defense.. He most definitely did. and for the most part was slick.. But wore his heart on his sleeve sometimes and would get pissed when tagged lol....And like Shane mosley kind of became an adopted Mexican. He liked to go for ko and usually got it.... I know this is i think i can safely say that ive probably seen him fight live more than any one on this site..... Saw basically all his fights in the 90s that were at the forum, he became a house fighter and LA became his adopted hometown (hes from DC).. Also became a big fan favorite even though most of his opponents(and fans in attendence) were Mexican.. Earlier i compared him to a prime Shane Mosely, but when he chose to he was much slicker.... One of my favorite fly fights of all time was his fight with Alberto jiminez who was also very talented,, i had Jiminez winning by one point.... Jiminez was also very fast and able to get to Johnson with his hard punching and speedy aggresiveness, while Johson boxed and engaged in slug outs from time to time.. I do think Johnson did improve after this, i think he learned alot from this fight, this was still somewaht early in his career.. IMO should have been a first ballot HOF and is very underrated, he was way overdue when he finally got his first title shot.
