Interesting matchup. Every once in awhile someone posts a matchup where I honestly don't have a strong feeling either way. I think a case could be made on both sides.
Would be similar to Pacquiao vs Clottey...... BUT because Marlon´s counters ! Maybe he (Starling) could win.... I still learning English, i´m sorry......
Hey, your English is better than my Brasilian/Portuguese ;-). Interesting point about Pac/Clottey. I think Starling is an overall level above Clottey, but Clottey is bigger and stronger. I don't know, i was a big Starling fan, but I think I'd lean toward Pac just on work rate and simply wanting it more. It would be a tough fight though and surely Pac would get hit with plenty of counters. I'm gonna say Starling doesn't stop Pac, and in that case, Pac will be too busy and get the decision.
This bout reminds me of a Jimmy McLarnin-Fritzie Zivic fantasy bout thread that I read once. It's so difficult because there's no doubt in either case who the greater p4p fighter is (McLarnin and Pac), but stylistically their opponents just may have the key to beating them. A frustrating fight to imagine
Pacman w12 Starling. I loved Starling, but he wouldn't be busy enough. But, I think he would make Manny come to him and would land alot, but would also have periods of covering up on the ropes where manny would be busy and take over segments of the fight. Starling is naturally bigger and has a great defense, so he's not going to be pummelled. Alot of Manny's punches would land on the gloves, but at least he'd be throwing more than Marlon. It would be a close decision for Manny.
Starling of 1987 to 1989 at the full 147 gives the smaller, but game Pacquiao a lesson in hi-tech boxing for 12 rds... WORD! MR.BILL
Starling would beat Pacquiao if he was 100% motivated but how often was that? The lazy Starling gets out-worked
That would still be close enough to go either way, in true Starling fashion.Pac would struggle to lay a glove on him. Angry Starling would slaughter him, maybe even P4P.A master counterpuncher, with very good strength, toughness, stamina, speed and some of the best defensive skills in Welterweight history. Not to mention ridiculously relaxed and comfortable in there. Guys that overly rely on awkward explosive offense and speed putting their opposition into a shell to make up for overall technical deficiencies and a lack of versatility were made for Marlon. Plus starling was always a moaning ***** with a huge chip on his shoulder, he'd no doubt take deep offense at Pacs reputation and comparatively pathetic moustache. Thus turning in a good effort. It was usually the dreary, light-hitting technical types that had him coasting and only showing off his own defensive skills.
Pacman would struggle to land anything on Moochy. Starling would exploit Mannys lack of inside game. It would be close though, Pacman would throw enough and Starling would coast enough. Hard fight to pick because of that, but Starling would get the better of it.
Manny's speed would be too quick for Starling, and he would win a decision in a tough fight. Starlings greatest advantage would be that he was strong at welt. and had not huge but decent punching power. But I could see Manny winning a decision with his speed, but not outclassing Starling at all.
