One of the greatest partnerships in Boxing is starting to show signs of cracks for the first time. Nacho has claimed Marquez has changed due to the money and fame after his brutal knockout of Superstar Manny Pacquiao in November. Claiming that Marquez "Previously after a fight it never took so long for him to visit the gym or go come visit his colleagues," Nacho said. "It's the same story with all boxers. I have had more than 20 world champions, and this almost always happens with everyone." Marquez isn't impressed by the comments stating he's ''Surprised'' by Nacho's comments and declared ''I am still the same, everything is okay. I haven't changed anything''. Marquez likely to announce next step in his magical career in April. Looks like there relationship will be strictly professional from now on.
Sad but enivitable. All relationships have their breaking point and, it seems, this is the end of what you rightfully call "one of the greatest partnerships".
Yeah it's odd, As you say it's not like he's come out of nowhere. He's a mature world renowned champion who people felt already beat Pacquiao. I wonder if it's more Nacho being annoyed with him not being in gym as much. Maybe feels this may get him back in line. Odd really..
Marquez has responded saying that he hasn't changed at all and he's very surprised Beristain would say something like this publicly and not to him privately. Says the reason he hasn't been back the gym is just because he's been busy with other commitments. To be honest, I think this is the pro-Pacquiao media trying to make an issue out of nothing. It's looks increasingly likely that JMM will refuse a fifth fight so they're trying to paint him as some arsehole who's let the money and fame go to his head. He's 39 or 40 with a 60 fight career, was well-known and respected before he KO'ed Pacquiao and has made millions of dollars already. I doubt very much that one win at this point would change him. Nacho has probably said all this off the cuff during a gym-session break when he's been asked where Marquez is that day and some pesky journalist has latched onto it and is trying to blow out it of proportion. A storm in a teacup. Expect a joint Marquez/Beristain statement soon saying they're "100% on the same page. There's no problems whatsoever" or something of that ilk.
Juan has achieved his main aim of defeating pac, no real motivation for him to get back into the gym so soon after December.
TBH i don't want Marquez to retire because i love witnessing his greatness. There's not many modern day greats around nowadays but he's one of them but in a way he can't IMHO beat what he did to Manny last time out. Have a farewell and say goodbye Mr Marquez, The warrior poet.
I want him to retire but only for the selfish reason that I want to buy his career set. As someone said above maybe the motivation has gone now. He spent 8 years trying to beat Pacquaio officialy and maybe it is time to quit now that he has done it.
I agree with everyone who says he should call it a day. He made his point and officially beat Pacquiao and effectively won that legendary rivalry in the eyes of the fans. There's nothing left for him now really. What would beating the likes of Bradley or Rios prove? Those wins wouldn't bring him half the buzz he got from finally getting an official win over Pacquiao and his legacy certainly doesn't need those names on his record. Even if he fought Manny again in a 5th fight, another win wouldn't really matter much in my opinion. People would just say "Oh, Manny's washed up and has been declining for a while now" if he got beat by JMM again. Marquez should take his money, his health, his secured legacy and his happiness and retire to his lovely family. He has NOTHING left to prove.
I think he'll have 1 or 2 more fights just for his retirement £££. His stock has never been higher and you can't blame him for cashing out on it
For sure. I'd have no issues with him fighting two more fights against guys he should beat convincingly. Say goodbye to his fans in a nice way and add a bit more to the bank but sometimes them type of things end up going wrong so if he did play safe for the first time ever i'd have no issue with it.
He shouldn't give Pacquiao a 5th fight, he doesn't owe him one whatsoever. The reason Pacquiao gave him a 3rd and 4th fight was because he HAD too. Fans were constantly shouting about how Pacquaio couldn't say he was the best P4P fighter because he'd been out-boxed by Marquez several times. Pacquiao had no choice but to agree to fight him again and again until he got a legit win in order to silence the doubters. Marquez at this point has no doubters. The only calls for a rematch this time are based on the fact it would be entertaining, not because it's merited.
These relationships rarely end on a good note, even for fighters who were close with their trainers. Hopkins with Bouie Fisher, Ali/Leonard with Dundee, Khan with Roach etc. Or maybe the fact that many were so close is what led to their split's, maybe they should have kept it on a more professional basis. Lennox Lewis and Emmanuel Steward were hardly best buds, but they had one of the best partnerships in boxing for a decade.
