Floyd used some nice right hand + left uppercut combos last night similar to the ones Tijuana and Juan used to whoop emmanuel's AZZ!

    Exactly!

Pacquiao has no defense for the right hand, and Mayweather's is super quick and fast.

I'm convinced that if Manny ever has the balls to step into a ring in a fight he knows already he will lose, with the reach he has, Mayweather is so good unloading his right hand, I think he will even be able to load up with it and tag Pacquiao hard and flush as many times as he wants.

Tazo, watch the early rounds of Mayweather-Cotto. Mayweather in study mode moved well to either side left or right.
Its not until he got comfortable with how he knew Cotto was approaching him, did Mayweather just sit in the pocket, even went to the ropes, and just baited Cotto and walked him into clean hard counters.

The work on the ropes Mayweather did on Cotto was absolutely fabulous.
Cotto was busy at the ropes, but his shots were being rode with and evaded, while the counters coming back from Mayweather were clean, precise, and hard.

The work Mayweather did on the ropes on Cotto reminded me of Marquez' much harder and clean connects in the first Juan Diaz fight, just terrific.

Based on what I've seen and saw of Mayweather vs Cotto, Mayweather is still performing as such a high level, I give Pacquiao next to zero chance to even be competitive.

I don't expect Manny to try and bully Floyd against the ropes, or stand in front to be hit by such shots so consistently. The question is not whether or not Floyd has the punches in his arsenal, but whether he can get the angle on them.

I wanted to wait before the hype died down on this fight to revisit this topic, but I suppose there's no avoiding it:

Once again, even though Floyd has some of the best feet in the game, he can be caught at the right angle from a southpaw stance. If Manny turns him and lands a left like that, I wouldn't be surprised if he knocked him down, after having knocked down Mosley. Floyd's got a chin on him, but one glove brush could change the dynamic. And that's just one possibility; I've only ever insisted that failing to get lead foot positioning is a liability, and it will remain so unless Floyd corrects this habit, which I doubt he can do fully.

Then of course there's the trick of landing the straight from all the way on the opposite side, something Manny does as well:

That's about all we can really get from watching this last fight. Manny's not a swarmer, and Miguel isn't an explosive speed demon who focuses on awkward angles.

I see your point, however, Cotto actually changed stance to land that left hand. He brought his right foot forward (which was what I wanted Cotto to do in my analysis of this bout) and landed the straight left. My point being, the comparison in terms of foot placement between that of Cotto and Pacquiao is not that important IMO.

If ever the Mayweather-Pacquiao bout comes off, Mayweather will no doubt be aware that he is up against an out and out southpaw (an unorthodox one at that...always sounds strange calling a southpaw unorthodox. Any other southpaw, you would think I was stating the obvious ). Pacquiao is not a southpaw boxer who can turn orthodox to land punches, or vise versa.

Cotto should employ this tactic more often IMO.

Oh I agree, there's not a lot at all you can draw parallels between, but people mentioned points relating the two, so I thought it appropriate to respond. Cotto switching stances definitely gives him the element of surprise, I also recommended he do it and was glad he did.

Floyd will for sure be aware he'll be facing a southpaw and knows the fundamentals, but it's just something he's failed to do on more than one occasion; he'd rather pressure at range and stifle the angle than turn his opponent consistently. He likes measuring you right in front so he can throw his power punches, and rarely hits on the move. It's what got him hit and/or uncomfortable against Corely, Judah, and DLH.

    Oh right, cool. :good

I actually thought he would do it more often than he did, but his jab was effective against Mayweather on it's own.

I'm going to bump your other thread once I've had some food. Just want to make a couple of points about the bout :good

    Aye, definitely. :good

Floyd got tagged by Cotto's left on enough occassions to suggest it would be perilous for him to get hit like that in a fight with Pacquiao. Cotto even caught him with a few leaping left counters when Floyd retreated in straight lines which surprised me.

Agree with others though that Floyd could potentially land the right at will should they meet.

Its boxing that beats Pac using distance and taking advantage of his numerous mistakes. What boxer has Pac beaten, even one thats not as good as Marquez let alone Floyd? That should be the real question.

Could someone post gifs of Manny throwing combos at his opponents when they're against the ropes?

Floyd cannot be as flat footed as he was for Manny, or will be hurt and possibly stopped.

I do think Floyd will have to walk down Manny to succeed in that fight as countering off the back foot with his weight anchored will be too difficult for Manny's fast hands.

Pacquiao runs in with horrible footwork and throws sloppy amatuer hooks.

In layman terms, Floyd is more of a flat-footed counter-puncher. Marquez is more of a laterally moving counter-puncher. In this regard, Marquez's counter-punching works more aptly against Pac's style than Floyd's does. However, Floyd is still the superior boxer, which is why I would still favor him over Pac.

Thought I'd share part of my post from another thread from earlier:

"Floyd is better than JMM yes but that doesn't mean he'll do better. JMM countered Pacquiao fast plenty of times and was able to land punches off balance well keeping up with Pacquiao's fast pace. Floyd fights nothing like that and could get caught trying to counter Manny. Still see Pacquiao's punch output dropping as well as Floyd countering him to death. Don't think he'll be fazed too much by Manny but he will land on Floyd I just don't think frequently.

Again, styles make fights. Cotto was able to bully Floyd at times landing clean bodypunches while infighting well. He did all this with patience and a solid jab. This does not apply to Manny Pacquiao. Not saying Manny can't have some success but I just don't see him getting the job done or even troubling Floyd much. Gets too frustrated."

BTW, brawlers can still beat boxers. Actually amazing Manny has come this far despite completely abandoning the basics of boxing. Solid jab for instance though he still is a great fighter without them as are Mosley & RJJ who also relied heavily on athletic gifts.

left uppercut followed by right hand. Floyd used this combo well against Cotto(e). Tijuana and Juan also used it while whooping emmanuel's AZZ!

He makes some mistakes with his balance and footwork, but that doesn't mean it's "horrible". Given his other technical flaws, he would have been knocked the **** out already if it weren't for his footwork.

    Good points, and fair answer.

Seeing Manny deal with Floyd's pressure is something I'd be interested in seeing.
