The middle would have caught a good portion of Pacquiao's nose, had the shot landed there it would have crushed the nose bone. I think the punch landed right on the mouth with the follow through trajectory of the punch having it bounce off the chin. Pacquiao was out instantaneously!
Which just goes to show, KO's are as much about, set up and timing as raw power. Hit a guy with your hardest shot while you are pressing and they are moving away and they'll take it, hit them again with less power, but with them moving into the punch when they are not expecting it and not prepared to absorb it and they'll get pole axed. Marquez was a master at setting up his punches, not just single punches either but in sequence. While he lacked the speed, power and size of some of Pac's opponents he made up for it in other ways.
