Mexican boxer Juan Manuel Marquez does not want to see and paint touched andalusia Puerto Rican Joe Cortez. Moreover, it has cataloged the "enemy of the Mexican boxers." Thus, Marquez became the cry in heaven when he learned that Cortez might be the referee in his fight with Juan Diaz next February 28 in Houston, Texas. "I asked for (Cortez) was not in the ring for the fight and I was assured it would be," Marquez told the Mexican publication ESTO. Then, Cortez demanded a public apology from Marquez. "They should apologize for these remarks are totally unfounded. My best friends are Mexican and my family to Mexico. I really do not know where these comments come out, "Cortez responded to First Time via phone from Las Vegas, Nevada. "If I were an enemy of the Mexicans, would not have had the opportunity to continue fighting when he was knocked down three times in the first fight against Manny Pacquiao. I left and made to continue the fight of his life, "said Cortez. Marquez based his feelings in the controversial outcome of the litigation between the Dominican Francisco Lorenzo and Mexican Humberto Soto, who was disqualified for hitting after Cortez Lorenzo on the floor. "If Soto would not have taken a blow to Lorenzo when he was on the floor, not discredited," the Puerto Rican. "The rules are the rules. The comments are unfair Marquez. Nobody can say those things to Joe Cortez. " Make your comment be the first
The rules are the rules according to Cortez..... not the actual rules of boxing. This is an excellent move from JMM, to get rid of an old, shot referee. It's a shame the authorities in boxing have a much harder job getting rid of old, shot fighters as well.
i think cortez is great, i talk boxing with him he sometime stops by my gym, he's a greaty serious guy, he doesn't pick favs because thats his job fair but firm joe cortez.
I don't particularly care if I'm first or not.... Mexicans have labeled Cortez as a racist....they are sounding like Jessie Jackson and Al Sharpton. Cortez makes the strongest argument in this case.....Marquez's goose would have been cooked with anyother referee when getting flattened 3 times in the first round....however, he took in consideration Marquez's abilities and proven past record and allowed him to redeem himself. As much of a fan that I am of Marquez....I would expect him to make an apology to Cortez in public....just as he publicly made the ugly accusation of Cortez being a racist. Marquez you proved you are the man in the ring....now do so outside the ring.
Its one thing to question a mans ability as age takes its toll....however, its another thing to question a mans veracity and integrity. I admit he is getting on the wrong side of the hill....but, keep in mind...agree or disagree with the Soto decision....Cortez accurately made the call down to the rule book. He made a judgement call for Marquez after he got flattened 3 times in the first round...which Marquez should appreciate.
Good point actually. I don't really question his integrity (though my post suggests otherwise) - I just think his best days are behind him, and therefore he should turn it in with dignity. I am sure boxing fans would appreciate him for the good jobs he did in the ring rather than the recent less than stellar ones. This applies to all sports really, some people carry on way too long and get remembered for the wrong reasons.
JMM should thank Cortez for not stopping his first fight with Manny after being put on his ass 3 times in one round. What an ungrateful **** this little guy is.
Cortez just owned JMM with thsi fact. Truth of teh matter is more than half of refs would have stopped that fight and not get questioned one single bit.
Cortez used to be a good ref, but he is getting worse and worse with time. I do not trust this guy anymore for any of the big fights. He has done a terrible job with Hatton/Floyd, Soto/Lorenzo, and several others. In Mexico Cortez is accused of screwing up the Mexicans in every major fight. And asking for his removal from this fight is not unfounded.
bad call by Marquez, if Cortez stays on as ref he will most likely not be as willing to give Marquez the benefit of the doubt for anything
