I know they fought at 135 and Casa was way past it, you could even say Marquez is not the same fighter but whatever. Lets say they were both in their prime and fought at 130, who would win? Casamayor was one of the most underated fighters of his era IMO. It might be a boring tactical fight as both are defensive counter-punchers who excell when facing aggresive fighters. Who wins and how does it play out?
I wouldn't say Casa was WAY past it. Both guys were past their prime, and admitedly Casamayor was more past it, but Marquez was still a natural junior lightweight so lets not pretend the deck was completely stacked against Casa.
casamayor went almost a full fight with marquez and it was competitive till he got KO for the first time in his career, but he was already way past his prime. He was coming from a gift against Santa Cruz and an incredible win against Katsidis after being at the verge of being KO...i didnt expect he was gonna last much against Marquez. But at 130 on his prime could have gone either way,he had a heck of a chin and was difficult to catch.
casa was slick and sometimes dirty, jmm owns him though. jmm just better at what he does then casa at what he does.
Casamayor was 37 and had lost to Santa Cruz and was in deep trouble and losing to Katsidis on the cards before the TKO. Marquez - Casamayor was a majority draw on the scorecards at the time of the stoppage. Marquez always had trouble with pure boxers like John, Norwood, Mayweather and Casamayor. Casamayor of the 3rd Corrales fight would probably beat him.
Casa was the favorite one to win that fight #1 lightweight in the world and Jmm was expected to be schooled or even kod by the naturally bigger fighter. WRONG!!! Jmm held his ground amd I think Casa putup his final great performance to another great. Lets not firget Jmm instead of fighting easy fighters he took of the 2 best lightweights one after the other. With those 2 wins in dramatic fashion the featherweight letem know he was there to stay. Jmm also seemed to lose some of his speed and power he had at 126-130, but he still good enough to prevail.
Okay my bad. Yea now I member Casa was the Rings LW champ they were fighting for that too, but yes, Jmm was the 3-1 favorite.
Well, he was pretty far from his best, thats for sure. He did have that great fight with Katsidis but he took a shitload of punishment in that fight and he looked awful in his fight before that against Cruz, though I thought that fight was closer than most people did. The year + layoff before the MArquez fight probably didn't help.
I thought it was a pickem fight and I remember quite a few people picking Casamayor based on his KO of Katsidis.
I think if they fought prime for prime Casmayor would have won a UD and probably put Marquez on his ass a couple of times IMO. Seriously underated fighter and always dangerous even when he was clearly past his best.
