I know the fight has been done to death but heres something i have thought about the fight First of all i havent seen it in its entirety and im not going to argue the result but this fight may possibly have been the best fight with a 24/7 hype show, most fights with the 24/7 did not turn out to live up to the hype also this was the first major PPV to be largely competitive, i mean earlier we saw Floyd get a statement making controversial KO that got ppl talking about boxing again then Manny was able to create a sports world buzz by being taken to the brink in a huge fight Now there are videos all over ESPN which doesnt cover boxing greatly on TV then i bet Sports Illustrated talks about this fight This was also a major moment for boxing because its arch nemesis UFC was getting free TV something that many boxing fans including me have said is what boxing needed and instead of everyone talking up the big UFC KO on free TV it seems the buzz is all about the close and debatable trilogy in boxing that not many were expecting much out of result of the fight aside and who you were rooting for aside this fight created a needed buzz for boxing i bet in the bars and houses where ppl huddled for the fight the viewers all had a different view and opinion of what they just saw and thats what boxing needs big fights we can argue about i mean its no fun to argue theoretical floyd manny fights that may not happen but when we get a nail biter we have something to debate much like Leonard Hagler or oscar vs mosley or any other big time bout thats close
It was on PPV so most people I have spoken to outside of here haven't actually watched it, even a few ex-boxers :S
i understand but my main point is that it was an interesting big fight that got ppl talking and debating i mean most of the real big ppv bouts have bin one sided and did not create buzz did Floyd picking apart Mosley and JMM help boxing did watching Manny steam roll Margarito and have Clottey hide help boxing but this last fight helped get ppl talking and arguing about a big fight all of this plus the fact that it was more interesting than the free TV UFC
Yeh you are right, but I do think that to casual fans or people who havent watched it, all they will hear is it was a robbery, and I don't think that will make them anymore interested Though perhaps when their next fight happens people will want to see purely because of th controversy
I think it did a lot of good. It was a mega fight that lived up to it expectations, even exceded it. Doesn't happen a lot of time in boxing. Pac Cotto was the last one. Most mega fights in the last few years didn't lived up to their expectations. With Klit Haye being the most recent example.
Great for boxing but Arum needs to do a better job to make sure Manny's opponents don't just back up and survive. Think he needs to get a new conditioning coach that is greener than Ariza that can slow Manny down a bit. Hard to see his right hook in real time. JMM 4 shouldn't happen as at 144 Juan doesn't have the power or stamina to make it a war.
Last four 2011 US PPV fights: May, Pacquiao/Mosley PPV- garbage and boring fight with two guys dry humping each other before and after each stand alone punch Sept, Mayweather/Ortiz PPV- Ortiz fights dirty and forgets he's in an athletic competition and gets KO'd after four complete rounds for not paying attention Oct, Hopkins/Dawson PPV- Hopkins and his fans and supporters believe it is a legit and totally cool move to jump on another fighters back, lifting ones' feet off the ground when doing so, just for extra leverage on ones' opponents back Nov, Pacquiao/Marquez III PPV- back and forth, somewhat action packed with a highly debatable decision which at least 80% disagree with --- I believe NONE of them did anything positive to boxing, aside from further increasing the talk and publicity of the two best fighters on the planet: Mayweather and Pacquiao. Mayweather/Ortiz certainly sparked the most conversation on boxing cites and non-boxing-exclusive media outlets.
