Boxing is not a game of tag, its a fight. Thus there is alot more pride in putting someones ass on the floor than landing 2 extra jabs a round to win a round. And if youve boxed, trust me its alot more embarrasing to kiss the canvas than to get outlanded by 2 jabs in a round. Overall the judges who has the final say has agreed with me in that regard. Pac 1-1-0.
I had Pac winning both fights, and yeah I know the majority had JMM winning the second fight and can see that, but to me it was very clear that Pac won that first fight and cant believe how people are crying JMM was robbed. People still scoring rounds based on crowd noise these days?
If memory serves, I've seen Pac spar with Vasquez and Lazcano, as you say, Fermoso Hernandez, Kahren Haruntunyan, Mike Onchando, Bernard Dunne, Alex Arthur; the skinny southpaw from Sacramento, dubbed "the Ghost" -- a two-time feather champ, who's name's gone clear outta my head, and Robbie Peden and Nate Campbell, to name a few. Sure a ton more will come to mind. Lazcano spars like a pro -- doesn't make a war out of it -- fights at a very measured pace. Manny accepts the unspoken terms, and they both get good work in -- no bad blood or cowboy ****. As fierce as Manny is on the attack, he never tries to get a pounda flesh even if someone sucker-shots him, or hits him low intentionally. He's so heavy-handed and quick to respond, legally, they don't do it twice. I've seen Pac and JT share the ring shadow boxing, but never sparring.
This is good stuff. No idea Manny has sparred with Alex Arthur & Robert "the ghost" guerrero, both of whom could have been potential fights for him. Have you seen anyone clearly get the better of Manny in sparring? Or is all the sparring really controlled and never gets that heated? BTW, having had a much closer look at these fighters and their sparring sessions with heavier guys. Would you agree with me in saying Pac, Guzman & JMM rules the LW division moving up from 130? :yep Thanks for sharing that!
d, I steer clear of commenting on anyone I haven't seen in person. So, I'll hold off on Guzman, but I have been impressed with him on TV. If you built a fighter from a schematic, it'd be JMM. Beristain's made him near perfect. Everything's by the book, a model of precision. Tie that to a fighting heart and pride and you have a helluva fighter. He has an answer for everything, can adapt, and when I last saw him still had Top-Gun reflexes. Guerrero's had some rough, spirited sessions with Manny, which marked him as a take-no-prisoners contender. But though Manny spars hard, he never does it like he needs to prove anything. Usually, when Freddie tells'm to pick-it-up, he's so heavy handed the balance of power shifts instantly. And if someone contemplated he could fight Manny on even terms, or make a name for himself in front of gym rats or the media, he quickly gets religion after getting touched (most don't look like ferocious swings) with some leather. It's funny, I've asked Manny about this: that many of his shots look like arm punches. He says, smiling broadly, he agrees, when he looks at the video, and is surprised at the damage he does. He offers that he think it's the speed that creates the power -- that constantly surprises opponents. Manny may be convinced of that, but being around the game since the Stone Age and seeing Hall of Fame trainers frustrated in search of the Holy Grail of Power, I'm convinced, it's simple: He's a born puncher.
I think that Manny will only face JMM if it's for a unification of the lightweight titles. That would mean Nate Campbell would also have to come into the mix as well.
AR, If ya wanna know what it was like at ringside that night, lemme know. I'll PM you a link to my write-up. The explosion of emotion in that first round has to be one of the most thrilling I've ever experienced in sports.
John Garfield, PM me on that one. Very interesting inside glimpses...You could write a blog of it all, and i'll be there. :good Great and breathtaking stuff. Urbano Antillon, also used to be a Pac sparmate, right?
this thread reminds me of the very close morales-mab trilogy. some fans of erik claim that morales won the trilogy 2-1, maybe even 3-0... fans of mab counter that mab even won all the fights, 3-0... so, all of this 2-0, 0-2 stuff in the two pac-jmm fights is nothing new... fans of both fighters will always have their partial scores for these fights. but the official record is clear that pac is 1-0-1 vs. jmm just like mab is 2-1 vs. erik. and nothing can change that.
a lot of fighter is better than him technically...its just that it doesnt really always work against pac and i know its pretty hard to accept. JMM survived the first, and lost the 2nd. A third is not necessary, but i know JMM fans wants it, so why not. They will always have an exciting fight.:good
