Last Saturday’s controversial Manny Pacquiao-Juan Manuel Marquez welterweight title clash may have left a bad taste in many mouths, but as an event, it was a major success, setting a record in Mexican TV history and becoming the country’s most viewed boxing event ever.

The broadcast, carried via tape delay on Azteca 7, brought in a rating of 31, easily surpassing the previous ratings record of 27, generated by 2010′s Pacquiao-Antonio Margarito bout. Third on the all-time list is March’s 23 rating for the Saul Alvarez-Matthew Hatton contest.

Translated into raw numbers, Pacquiao-Marquez III had an average live audience of 37.2 million viewers, roughly a third of Mexico’s total population (113.4 million). By comparison, the only sporting event in the U.S. with similar numbers is the Super Bowl, which also generally attracts about a third of the country’s total population.

Congrats to Marquez! Before, he was overshadowed by Barrera and Morales, but now, he's the man!

JMM deserves this kind of attention. Well done champ. Record viewers on the night of his biggest win. That is awesome.

Canelo is already in third place and is still developing. If he continues to improve and do well, he can set some huge records and become a megastar.

Maybe a weird question but why dont they have ppv in mexico, it seems more popular there than in the us, doesnt have to be as expensive but might make more, especially if you add some mexicans to the card around a holiday.

There used to be PPV here but that was the worst decision ever..It basically drew all attention out of boxing and boxing disappeared from public awareness for years...

A whole third of the country! More, considering they were likely all households, and not individuals purchasing them.
