You can't go by the IMMEDIATE post-fight interview to make a judgment of that gravity...you got to figure alot of that can be chalked up to the fact that he was thoroughly exhausted and had his face bashed up a bit. If he sounds bad in subsequent interviews, it would be an ominous sign..
Russell was sharp. I would like to see him more often. Someone mentioned that the last round was controversial and because of it we should see another fight. The last round was NOT controversial - it was an incredibly dominant performance by Vazquez and an awsome show of stamina by him, proving that he wants it just a little bit more than Marquez. The knockdown was rightly ruled as such by Russell, because anyone could see that without those ropes that he used as a prop, Marquez was heading to the canvas in a real hurry. Furthermore, if it wasn't for Russell's intervention, the barrage of punches to the defenceless Marquez, was going to put him down on the canvas eventually in that sequence (and that could have resulted in a tko). When all is said and done, however, this fight was close and exciting enough, to easily justify a fourth fight and if need be, a fifth rubber match.
I'd rather see Vasquez-Marquez 4 than say...Vasquez-Erik Morales where a bigger puncher like El Terrible can do MUCH MUCH MUCH worse damage than Raffy. Both of these guys are shot at this point. Sad but true reality is that against anyone else, they would get hurt a lot worse. It's not to slight them...just when you get programmed to wars, You can't suddenly go back. It's the reason all these trilogy fighters never actually recover. Gatti,Ward, Morales, Barrera. Erik Morales is shot at how old now? 29-30? As for who wins? We do.
Vasquez did sound slurred in spanish but he's never been a real good interview. Then again if your nose is smashed I doubt you're gonna sound the same.
It really impossible to say that Marquez or Vasquez are going to be damage after this fight. I think these guys should fight a tune up or a better fighter than a tune up and if they look good I would have no problem seeing them fight again.
trilogy is enough for both fighters... it may cause them further damage if they fight again... time for them to be pitted against other opponents especially vasquez if he wishes to move up to FW.. rafa has already established a legacy so it is ok for me even if he retires after this fight..
I wouldn't mind seeing them mix it up again, but they both need to take at least six months off to rest and heal up. They have had three wars in less than a year. I would not be surprised if neither guy is ever the same again. Great fight. Great finish.
NO, they should not fight again, there is nothing more to prove. They should take a loooooooooooooong time to rest. That 12th round was brutal, BRUTAL.
Marquez is older and running out of time I think they deserve another good pay day both guys got hurt few time that right hand in the nine from Marquez sounded like it a baseball being hit out of the park what a fight!.
Thats not entirely true. Corrales wasn't near the fighter he was after the First Castillo fight. Ward retired after his trilogy but wasn't nearly as effective in the 2nd and 3rd fights. And while Gatti went on being successfull a few more years, when he fell, he fell hard losing by ko to light hitting Baldomir and Gomez. Listening to him talk now you can hardly understand a word he says. Brain damage doesn't always reveal itself right away, Look at Meldrick Taylor. There are plenty of other examples too. My point is, these 3 fights will severly effect one or both of these guys down the line. I hope it doesn't happen, but very rarely do you see fighters go thru that magnitude of punishment and stay the same.
