If you seriously think the only reason Arum wants nothing to do with Martinez is because he's scared of him being overweight then I don't know what to tell you.

 

Well, it is all relative since they won't do same day weigh ins which is my personal preference.

 

Nice cherry pick. The main reason is probably that Martinez's promoter doesn't promote as much as rely on TV money so Martinez doesn't bring any revenue that HBO doesn't chip in. He won't sell more than a handful of PPV's and arena seats. Golden Boy and Top Rank do a lot more promotion that the 'other players'. Feel free not to tell me anything. I'm capable of looking at the big picture and form my own conclusions.

 

Golden boy isn't exactly signing up their guys to fight Martinez either

Turning now to your revised argument, the old "Lou DiBella is a shitty promoter and if Sergio was with Top Rank he'd get those fights with ease" excuse. Spare me, neither Top Rank nor Golden Boy has demonstrated anything that would convince me they'd have a 38 year old Argentine achieving superstardom, much less put him in with anyone who actually does have that potential. Martinez's risk is so high that no reward calculation nor promotional consideration is even necessary for Arum.

 

You can easily do that yourself by putting me on your ignore list. I'm tired of Martinez calling out WWs and JWWs and people suddenly say they are all ducking him FFS. If he wants to fight at those weights then let him go back and re-establish himself there. I don't give a flying fig how old he is or how many fights he has left. WWs and JWWs aren't obligated to give him a payday.

 

Of course not, but the idea that all it takes is magically "re-establishing" himself at those weights is rubbish. The only reason he moved up in the first place is because absolutely no one wanted anything to do with him at junior middle.

 

He moved up for the paycheck and now thinks he is 'entitled'. He has a **** poor promoter. Him and Paul Williams both. How can you put these two fighters in the ring and have so many empty seats otherwise? Especially with Paul Williams? HBO is getting a lot pickier about the fights they will pay for and these "promoters" are lost. GB and TR put on PPV's if they have/want to. These other "promoters"? The get HBO/Showtime money and that is about it. No gate. Remember Berto fighting in front of 400 people? HBO money was all he could get. Dibella sucks as a promoter. Plain and simple.

 

Feel free to let me know what would count as "not sucking" in promoting a 38 year old Argentine in the US. Top Rank and Golden Boy do great for guys who actually have an existing boxing fan base they'd appeal to, but do little for guys like Martinez. See Top Rank's continued pissing about with Gamboa for the most recent example of this.

 

Gamboa is not ready for prime time. GB and TR build careers. There is more money to be made in boxing in Europe right now for someone like Martinez. He is from Europe but doesn't seem interested in that. Out of DiBella's comfort zone perhaps? A perfect example of what I mean. If it isn't HBO or Showtime money, DiBella isn't interested. Chavez Jr. would be a valid opponent but we all know he is being protected for good reason. ****, I don't know of any GB MW's at the moment. Point is, there are plenty of suitable European MW's and Sergio is European and could make good money in Germany. Why not interest there?

 

Gamboa was ready to take on the biggest name in his division and was kept away from him at all costs, despite sharing the best promoter in the business with said name. Now it looks like he'll have to move up two divisions to fight a guy in Rios who by all rights belongs in an even higher division because the company has absolutely no plan for "building his career."

I'd love to hear what big moneymakers there are in Germany that Martinez could fight. And please don't say Sturm, who has absolutely nothing in his history that would indicate he'd take on a fight like that in Germany or anywhere else. Other than that, who's left who he could make "good money" fighting? Golovkin and Proksa are no bigger draws in Europe than Martinez is in the States.

All this talk of Europe seems somewhat irrelevant to the point I was making however. Martinez signed with DiBella because he wanted to fight in the States. Fighting off-network in Europe would not do anything to change his drawing power in the States, so citing "not taking fights in Europe" as evidence that DiBella is somehow failing him as a promoter is not convincing.
