I think so, yes.

Because, as the diagram shows, Pac’s fight-night weight - 148 - is practically the same as his weight division limit. Just like Martinez’ fight-night weight - 168 - is the same as the super middleweight limit. Pac, essentially, is currently doing what Martinez and his promoter say they shouldn’t be asked to do – fight at the division that’s equal to his fight-night weight.

But if Martinez wants to meet him at 154, he’s actually asking Pacquiao to do more than what he (Marinez) is refusing to do up at 168. He’s asking Pacquiao to fight at a division (7/8 pounds) higher than his fight-night weight. It’s almost like Pascal asking Martinez to go up to 175 pounds – 7 pounds higher than his (Martinez’) fight-night weight.

I guess the only thing that goes in Pac's favour, is that Martinez may have to drain himself to make 154. But even then, that's not a certainty. It's a huge risk to commit to.

 

Let's be real Rico, this call out by Martinez is nothing but a money grab. I don't blame him, but that's what it is. If Martinez was an unpopular fighter, everyone would be killing him for being the MW champ and calling out a WW. Good thing for him, he is popular. I hope he eventually does get his money fight.

 

Lets get this fight done at 154, no excuses.

 

pac and his camp have said that they will never fight at jmw again as it was stupid to do it the first time, that was a money grab by arum and they obviously knew that margarito was shot. Pac is a welterweight now people, get it through your head, he shouldn't have to come up in weight if its not a safe decision for him. If martinez wants to fight cotto at 154 or margarito at 154 fine, that is there weight class or if mayweather will fight at 154 but we all know he ain't a jr. middle either. Clean out the 160 lb. division then move up to 168, don't be calling out fights with welterweights, its a bitchmove and he is just doing it for press.

 

"formula's" don't work in boxing. Different people can move up in weight differently and more effectively then others.

 

Oh definitely. I don’t blame him either. Martinez is a guy whose luck has been against him for far too long. It’s a shame that just when he’s reached the pinnacle of his game and receiving the exposure he deserves....the division he’s operating in – middleweight – is lacking high-profiled fighters. Calling out the bigger names, who just so happen to be welterweights, is understandable considering his age.

However, he and his fans must acknowledge and respect Pacquiao’s reasons for not fighting him, because he (Martinez) is using the exact same ones for not fighting super middleweights.

 

Exactly. Just like ‘styles make fights’ in boxing, too. Just because Pacquiao jumped up and beat a slow, defenceless Margarito at 150.....it doesn’t mean that he’s ready to go another 4 pounds up and face a quick, athletic, hard-punching Martinez – who for all we know, could still safely make the 154 weight and go back up to 168 on fight night. That’s a huge commitment for Pacquiao to make, who we forget is still a small welterweight himself, and can only move up so far in weight.

 

I'm not surprised that Martinez is calling out Pac. That's where the money and fame is.

But it does look like a ***** move, calling out a guy who is so much smaller, then turning around and saying that he himself is too small to fight heavier guys.
