I've been just watching some footage of Sergio Gabriel Martinez and what caught my eye is that he seems to have changed trainers between fights at some point. These trainers were credited according to the TV stations that broadcasted the fights: - Against Margarito: Raul Paniagua (SPACE) - Against Alex Bunema, Kermit Cintron, Williams I & Pavlik: Juan Leon Diaz (HBO) - Against Williams II: Gabriel Sarmiento (HBO) It's not uncommon that fighters switch trainers, especially taking into account that the Margarito fight was very early in his career. But does anyone know why he seems to have switched trainers after he defeated Pavlik in a great fight? Was Gabriel Sarmiento just a replacement for Juan Leon Diaz and he's still with Diaz nowadays, but couldn't be there for Willams II for whatever reasons there may be? Could somebody enlighten me please
I'm pretty sure the trainer was the same in both fights with Williams. After all, not too many trainers wear sunglasses.
i thought hes had Sarmiento for a while now? i dunno but i remember a very similar looking guy with shades in Sergio's corner during the Williams I or Pavlik fight where his trainer said "Keep hitting him you ass!" lol I'm pretty sure it was Sarmiento.
I'll post some screenshot of the broadcast in a minute, maybe HBO just credited the trainer wrong? The trainer in the Willams II fights looks like to be the same guy as against Bunema, Cintron, Williams I & Pavlik. Maybe my eyes are playing tricks on me, judge yourself. Maybe HBO screwed up and credited him wrong? Margarito: This content is protected Bunema: This content is protected Cintron: This content is protected Williams I: This content is protected Pavlik: This content is protected Williams II: This content is protected Williams II (different scene): This content is protected
http://www.boxinginsider.com/headlines/talkin-boxing-with-sergio-martinez-trainer-gabriel-sarmiento/ interview that may clarify things. i dont know where the leon guy comes into play.
Yeah, the Pavlik and last Williams II pic looks like the exact same person. Maybe the guy just changed his name?
Thanks for the pointer, interestinng read. So this Juan Leon Diaz is prolly his conditioning coach or some other assistant trainer? My initial idea was that Diaz is the actual trainer and HBO just credited him wrong in the last fight. It's amazing that they actually credited Sarmiento wrong in a bunch of fights as it turned out: against Bunema, Cintron, Willams I & Pavlik!
