Martinez has always been a sucker for the left hook

I've always disliked boxers who habitually carry their hands down at their waist. It's a lazy way to fight that has been made popular by fighters who could get away with it in their primes like Roy Jones.
Later, as his reflexes eroded Jones would learn to pay for this lazy habit by KO.
Froch also paid for his left hand laziness in the first Groves fight.

Cotto is a great fighter with great boxing skills which far exceeds Martinez's level of skills.
In their fight you could see that in the early rounds Martinez tried hard to correct his defensive hand laziness but had fought his entire career with this defect and was not used to carrying his hand high to protect his chin.
Than came one of Cotto's short and crisp left hooks that connected cleanly in the middle of round one. That punch shook Martinez so much that Martinez never really recovered from it. Throughout the rest of the fight Cotto continued to connect sharp left hooks to the jaw and eye of Martinez.

People try to use the excuses that Martinez was injured, or that his legs were shot, but those are just weak and invalid excuses.
The truth is, Cotto is such a skilled fighter that he was able to take advantage of Martinez's weak boxing and defensive skills while also exposing his weak chin.
Cotto is just a better boxer and technician than Paul Williams and Martinez. Simple as that.

You make valid points as to how athletisism and that hands-down style correlate especially the older the fighter gets.

Regardless of weight, Cotto probably is the more skilled operator - but to say that Martinez was'nt shot to **** is blasphemous. Yes, MArtinez has some defensive inadequacies but it wasnt just that that lost him the fight.

His movement, co-ordination, punching etc were a shadow of him circa PW2, Dzinduruk. I think if they fight had've taken palce then that Martinez power would've commanded a lot more respect from Cotto.

I mostly agree with you but I would have to argue that between Cotto and Martinez, Cotto has been through many more physical wars than Martinez has in his career.
In fact, Cotto has been through so many wars that since his fight with Plaster hands, every one has said that Cotto was shot and beat down.

I'm a massive fan of Cotto (And the fact he wears the coolest shorts - strange observation) but he did beat a shot Martinez - although he did do it convincingly and looked strong in doing it.

My sentiments exactly. Cotto is one of the most skilled fighters of the last couple decades. Martinez was a level or two below but no one could see that against he level of competition he was facing.

That's because people are generally not the smartest. They obsessed over the Trout fight way too much and almost acted like it was the only fight Cotto had ever had. The main reason people were so convinced Martinez would beat Cotto was not so much skill but physical attributes (Martinez fast, powerful, good reflexes, bigger etc).

Cotto was clearly not himself that night. He severely underestimated Trout. He thought Trout was a bum. The thing is Trout has a style is a bad match up for Cotto and he has a good chin.

I agree. You don't judge a fighter on just one fight, you judge him on all of his fights.

No the reason people were convinced that Sergio would have beat him myself included was that Cotto was on the decline ..Trout was not as good as Martinez yet he beat him down . It's not like. Cotto was walking through people now ..

You can make it work if you're young and have the reflexes. It's nice to have your hand down so you can see your opponent better and anticipate what they are going to throw next. Both sergio and roy also used it as bait to get their opponent to open up and commit to a punch then use their superior speed to tag them.

The only problem I have with the style is other fighters get a bit ****y and try to use it, and they end up paying for it. Yeah it looks pretty but only a few can pull it off.
