I do actually think he could plan to give Pavlik confidence. It's a dangerous strategy, yes, but it does happen in sport. An overconfident opponent is the easiest to beat, if you are actually better than them. If he did allow Pavlik to win a couple of rounds, then did what he knew he could in the 9th...then he won the fight there because it was such a demoralising change in events. Pavlik and every one in the arena knew from then on that the fight was lost, so if could have worked. That said, I don't think he did. I think it's probably lost in translation, though I do think he slowed down in the middle four rounds, in order to finish strong and make an impression on the judges in the last four.
I've heard similar statements from Martinez several times since the fight. I don't think anything was lost in translation.
maybe he didn't plan on pavlik getting "confidence" but its obvious taking the breather was part of his plan. you know your ignorant Pavlik posts are what made me stop rooting for Pavlik and wish defeat on him, its a shame that one man could turn me on one of my fighters but just the thought that there MIGHT be other Pavlik fans like you was enough. **** Maravilla and Pavlik could fight 20 times and Sergio would win them all.
Yeah, besides the cuts, Pavlik never appeared to be hurt. He was never in danger of being ko'd, but on the other hand neither was Martinez. Maybe buzzed once or twice, but nothing serious.
The guy is a *****. From his showboating in the ring right down to his goofball corner man with his ****ing shades on. 2 Live Crew said it best.
I wouldn't really refer to those as "pity" rounds. More like strategically deceptive breaks in momentum.
no one at middleweight or higher has knocked pavlik out , not pantera or any other heavy handed guys , hes got a good chin
For Pavliks face to look like a slice of Pizza after taking no where near the shots PW took then you imagine if he got caught with the shots PW was getting hit with!!! He would have been knocked out cold!!!!!!!!!
Good, not great. Both Taylor and Zertuche had him on ***** street. His heart won him those fights. He's very capable of getting KO'd.
ok sounds good, except the "then gave some confidence to the champion for the next two or three........." He was resting and KP came on strong. If you have the champ in trouble, you never ever let him back into the fight by design:-(
Although KP had some good middle rounds they were not won as convincing as the rounds Martinez won! So for anyone to feel KP was "mounting a comeback" then your really reaching!!!!
I don't know that I fully buy it, but that's a badass statement. There's something about Sergio's confidence that's just...insulated from seeming abrasive. It's not something you can quite put your finger on; he's undeniably cocky but in a very likable way.
