Exactly. I actually think its mind games since Martinez and his team know there is a strong chance Pavlik will exercise the rematch clause, just trying to get into Kelly's head more; nothing more to it.
He seems like a "natural". Like he never really needed to learn all the basics and the fundamentals perfectly, like a good boxer should. His movements looks so easy, loose and second nature.
and that's exactly what it looked like. the way he started fighting in the 10th it was like he was in the 1st round all over again. great execution by SM.
I hadn't thought about this. Definately possible. It's also possible that, like another poster said it's lost in translation a little. I definately don't think that he intentionally lost rounds, but I definately think he was resting up and that changing his rythm late in the fight was without question part of the game plan.
Martinez clearly won the first two rounds. Round 3 is debatable. Martinez won the fourth, and then Pavlik swept rounds 5-8. Martinez understood that he was losing the fight, and turned up the heat. I have to give him some credit for that. He reminds me of Calzaghe in that respect. Like Joe, if he senses the fight slipping away, he can crank the heat up. However, Pavlik sustained cuts that required 30 stitches to close. It's not that hard to take over a fight when your opponent can't see. Big Reg is a well known long term Pavlik hater. He did not provide a source or post a link. I really doubt that Martinez actually said those things. If he did say those things, I hope Williams and Pavlik both beat him senseless in his next two fights.
No I am not. I get frustrated when he refuses to give Hopkins credit for that win, other than that though you don't see me posting anything negative about Pavlik. And I assure you the quote is accurate.
for these elites who actually box and move, it's not hard to beat pavlik. the blueprint to beat pavlik is well and truly known now, and he'll have some more boxing lessons in his fights. he's going to get outclassed a few times in his career. he's very limited, but one good thing about pavlik is his losses makes me a lot of money with the hype he's delivered.
Yeh, the quote is accurate, I dug it up myself last night when you posted it, I believe its on a site that talks boxing. But Sergio doesn't speak English, so it's very possible it got lost in translation (perhaps even going both ways).
I don't think he was dead tired, seemed to me he was conserving himself when I watched it live. He had simply set a pattern that Pavlik had picked up on, Pavlik should be given credit for that.
Martinez even did the windmill like hopkins did.... he studied the fight tape to the t pavlik was always right in front of him.
I guess this a (bad) translation from his post-fight comments in the ring. When Larry Merchant asked him about his fight plan, he said that he planned starting strong, but he knew that Pavlik would show his true champion colours at some point in the fight (as he did in the middle rounds), and that he would need to close the show strongly to take a decision. I will try to prepare a full translation of what he actually post-fight. So all of this is just a confusion, unless you are referring to some other quote or statemenr.
:good And IMO the cut certainly didn't hurt Sergio...I think he saw that he cut him, and took his game up a notch...he capitalized on it as much as possible which was a great choice to make.
 It's not like Pavlik suffered those cuts going into the fight and Martinez took advantage of it. Those cuts WERE a result of Martinez landing laser-like punches.
