Martinez really deserves criticism for this Cotto fight.

Yeah, pseudo-accountant "boxing fans", every warrior deserves to get paid. There is also a set of standards that should be upheld and Martinez is getting way too big of a pass for this Cotto fight.

All criticism to Mayweather, but Mayweather has never pulled a ***** move like this. Mayweather fights styles that suit him, always takes the high reward/low risk name... BUT, he does fight relevant guys in his division or a division north. I don't see him signing to fight a shot Lightweight like Martinez is fighting a shot Welterweight.

Now, if Cotto had done a successful LMW campaign and beat Trout and some others, especially if he beat Mayweather or had the fight been controversial, then this fight would have some relevancy to it. But at the top level at LMW he defeated two shopworn former Welters in Margarito and Mayorga, a paper titlist light hitting Yuri Foreman and lost twice.

It's just a ridiculous fight, holding up the MW division. Cotto doesn't stand a chance and anyone that knows boxing knows that to be the case and then you have all of this primadonna nonsense from Cotto himself. It just would have been better for boxing had he retired after his lopsided loss to Trout.

Cotto's style suits Martinez, size advantage and Cotto will be easily stopped in a joke of an event.

    :nut

It's completely whacked that people aren't criticizing this nonsense while 3G has to wait on the sidelines and may never get that lineal title from Martinez.

Floyd has not fought a legit opponent that was in their prime other than Marquez. If he fought legit opponents, they were washed up, and if he fought prime opponents, they were not legit. So I don't know what you're talking about

Dude, its a tune up. Unless he is totally shot in which case it doesnt matter anyhow.

If all goes well he has said he wants to fight GGG next. Why people are whining so hard that Martinez takes a very very lucrative tune up fight after a year+ off from injury is totally beyond me.

I can agree on everything else you said except I believe Cotto still serves a purpose. His name still builds the name of others. Let's consider, Sergio gets a convincing win a somewhat competitive and entertaining fight. Sergio's stock goes up, the GGG fight is now worth a lot more, enough for Sergio to want to take that chance, so we get that fight. It may not happen just like that but we know it could, whereas it may never happen without a name like Cotto's to build upon.

I hope you are forgetting Jose Luis Castillo rather than honestly believing he doesn't fit that criteria. Same with Ricky Hatton, if you are willing to list Marquez despite that weight/size advantage Floyd had... I'm guessing you would list the prime WW opposition he has fought in Baldomir, Ortiz, Guerrero, and Maidana as "not being legit" despite all of them being Top 5 WW's recently coming off their best career victory, but OK.

Tell me how Sergio has done any different?

As you say, name me the legit opponents he fought who weren't washed up or the prime opponents he fought who were also legit?

If Marquez is the only prime opponent you've got on Floyd's ledger, then Paul Williams is the only prime and legit opponent Sergio has on his. A guy like Segei Dzinziruk, but if you don't feel Baldomir, Ortiz, Guerrero, or Maidana apply then you certainly shouldn't think Dzin does.

In fact I would say it's a very tough fight for a tune up and Cotto will be no less competitive vs Martinez than Guerrero, Alvarez or Maidana vs Floyd. Only difference is Sergio has a better chance of getting a KO because he can actually hit hard unlike Floyd.

See, this would make sense if Golovkin was fighting Cotto. But Sergio is. Everyone already knows and respects Sergio. Most everybody knows Golovkin...

It is a big paycheck as Sergio rides into the sunset of his career. Nothing wrong with that.

It will be interesting to see how folks value a Sergio victory over a MW-debuting Cotto.

    Guerrero- top 5 WW
    Alvarez- lineal champion JMW
    Maidana- top 5 WW

Cotto- never fought at MW; fringe top 5 JMW

That only shows the difference in skills and public standards between Floyd and Sergio.

Maidana is not a top 5 Welterweight. Based on what? A win over Broner

He's defiantly behind Mayweather, Bradley. Marquez and Pacquiao. Being that he lost every round to Devon Alexander he's behind him too. Alexander lost a one sided fight to Porter so he's behind him too. And that's just 6 guys off the top of my head.

So what? If the fights will be equally competitive then what's the problem, especially considering it's a comeback fight after an injury layoff?

why are you bothering with "know nothing"?

Serg is as old as dirt and deserves a payday. We all hop he fights GGG but there are a bunch of other fighters out there the g cubed could fight to solidify his position in the division. the line in lineal has been broken all the time in every division so GGG may have to pick up the pieces when serg is gone

Martinez needs the workout plus get paid for his recent inactivity due to injuries.
Cotto will give him a good scalp & a good name on resume to build a possible last big fight.

Based on the fact he holds 1 of 3 major belts at WW. That's more than enough.

Martinez is finished and he as well as his handlers know it... A fight with any other elite MW at this point is too risky, Cotto is a name and a very low risk opponent being that he is also over the hill, and is a blotted WW... Sergio should retire after this if he isn't going to face the other beltholders or middleweight contenders. I'm a big fan and this is not typical from him, he usually wants to fight the best....

You try to say Martinez is worse than Floyd??? :rofl
Floyd was offered $8mil to fight Margarito but instead fought Carlos
Baldomir for far less. The excuse was Baldomir had beaten Zab Judah & was therefore champion But then who does Floyd fight later??? The same Zab Judah. I gues he miraculously improved huh ?? :patsch
As for GGG having to wait How long has Manny Paquaio had to wait for the fight he should have got 5 or 6 yrs ago with Floyd ??
    Martinez >>>>> Mayweather
