In his first fight at 160 in 2009, he lost to Paul Williams via Majority decision. Then in 2010 he beat Pavlik for the WBC/WBO Middle weight titles. then still in 2010, he defended the WBC title against Paul Williams and knocked him out round 2. Now 2011 he beat Serhiy Dzinziruk via 8th round TKO for the WBC Diamond belt. So why not try to unify against Sebsatian Zbik, Felix Sturm, Sebastian Sylvester and Dimitry Pirog and establish his name at 160 before looking for a fight somewhere else?
He should that, or move up to 168 and tangle with the rich, big name talent there Either path will enhance his legacy
ONly if they're willing to do those fights in America. He's already been robbed of two decent victories.
I think he wont because there's less money in it. He's probably thrilled by the past year or so, going from unknown Argentinian fighter to the #3 fighter in the sport and an emerging superstar, but he's not young, so I bet he wants to cash out on his name quick. Its no mystery why he's calling out PBF and Manny Pac, he'll make 8 figures so he can retire large.
He should fight Sturm or Pirog at 160 and if he wants a big money fight maybe the Cotto-Margarito winner if he can't get Floyd. Doesn't look like he's even considering 168.
No money and no American TV. Don't think Martinez will try to unify. And not that I really care, because belts are meaningless, but Pirog's WBO belt should really be Martinez' belt. WBO stripped him for no reason and stripped him just so Pirog and Jacobs could fight for a "World Championship."
Getting at least two or three of the belts at 160 will make him the undisputed unified champ and with that he'll be the most sought fighter in the division wherein he can also dictate his purse. It's too early and illogical to move up to 168 now.
He said he wont fight Pirog cos it´s a no reward fight. Hel only get his WBO title back and thats it.
Although he's still in his prime, he likely feels he doesn't have much time left at the age of 36. Father time will eventually catch up to him. He wants to become P4P king before the door closes and I don't blame him. Unfortunately there aren't any big names in his division. At this point I feel it's reasonable for him to fight Cotto at 154. But Arum won't let it happen. Sergio will probably end up doing what you think is ideal anyway, since getting a fight with either Pac or Mayweather sounds unrealistic.
I don't agree. I doubt Pac would take it, but Floyd might surprise us all and take it at 154, if he and Pac can't agree to terms. It'd be a big way to one up team Pac, as virtually nothing they can do will top this win if May pulls it out. It's kind of what May did when he fought Mosley, no one thought he would, Mosley looked like a stone killer after beating Margo like he stole something, but May took it to one up Pac. Team Pac themselves admitted they wanted no part of Shane at the time, so after his win, it seemed Mayweather had an edge in negotiations. Problem is, he didn't persue it. However, I wouldn't be surprised if he takes the Martinez fight, it'd make big money, I think (and I think Floyd thinks) its a winnable fight, and it'd be meaningful in terms of negotiations with Pac, and that's all that I think means anything to Floyd.
Ideally, that's what he should be doing but I guess he wants to cash in ASAP since he's no spring chicken himself.
If he thinks that he is the # 1 p4p now, he should move up and fight either Pascal or brute same as the way PAC did moving up not moving down 2 steps!
