I get it. Nothing the sanctioning bodies do should surprise me. But the WBC is actually taking a page out of the WBA's book and granting something for injured/inactive/weight class changed fighters to a current active fighter to free up their title?

I saw it on the scene. Anyone know anything about it? I know Sulaiman especially loves Mexican fighters wearing the green belt, but is he really going to free up the title so Chavez Jr and Zbik can fight for it while Martinez is still THE MW Champ?

He isn't even injured. HBO was giving him **** over his next opponent and if I recall they were aiming for a march or april date. Can't remember.

But they usually make a Champion Emeritus for the reasons I listed above. Kessler is emeritus for the SMW belt so basically, if he comes back from his eye injury, he's entitled to a crack at the champion. Floyd is WBC Emeritus for JrMW AND WW unless they changed their minds so he could get instant crack at Pac if they haven't already stripped him for defending his WBO WW or he could assert his status to fight Berto.

In its discretion, the WBC may designate and recognize, upon a two-thirds majority vote of their Board of Governors, one or more emeritus world champions in each weight class. Such a recognition is for life and is only bestowed upon present or past WBC world champions.

The following boxers have earned the Emeritus Championship appellation throughout their careers:
Lennox Lewis, Vitali Klitschko, Bernard Hopkins, Mikkel Kessler, Floyd Mayweather Jr, Kostya Tszyu, Manny Pacquiao, Érik Morales, Vic Darchinyan, and Édgar Sosa.

Guess you can add Martinez now to that list. He's only been WBC champion less than a year.

    :patsch

They just snuck this one in. Only heard of it the other day, when someone suggested Hopkins was Champion Emeritus at LHW. WBC and the WBA are jokes

He tends to really favor Mexicans. i think that's why he's pushing for JCC Jr. That's also why i'm 110% sure that they're stripping Devon after his fight with Bradley so they can coax Morales and Marquez into fighting for it.

They might end up with a legal fight on their hands because of that should Alexander win.

Funny How we never heard that Hopkins was champion Emeritus before the Pascal fight or anything....you'd think that something like that would have been a good gimmick sell angle. Instead you only hear about it after the draw happens. Rediculous. Its pretty pathetic honestly if you ask me the way the WBC has been acting lately with there invention of rediculous belts like the diamond and the silver belts. Its like they are soo ****ing money hungry/in-dept to that what's his name that they gotta be the most corrupt assholes out there.

Honestly this to me looks like they are bailing out Martinez from having to fight Lemeuix. Pricks. **** boxing is pissing me off. There is a rediculous amount of up and coming talent in the middlewieght division and it seems like the only thing that promoters are trying to think about is how not to make these fights happen. Thanks for pirog jacobs but the rest of the promoters can eat a dick.

Might. I doubt they'll want another lawsuit, they're running out of impressive sounding precious metals/ jewels to name titles after. However, I think they're betting on Bradley winning since the title will go vacant instead if he does. I guess he doesn't want to pay their fee after they stripped him.

who cares about the title, I gave up on them years ago. Martinez doesn't need them, he is the man at 160 and he has hbo.

Seems rather silly to me. Martinez just fought and won a pretty credible defense. His last 4 opponents were Cintron, Williams, Pavlik, and Williams II. It pissed me off to see him calling out welterweights, and accusing junior welters of ducking him, but why not give him some time, or let him have an easy fight with Zibik or Lee?
