I thought his offensive work was ok at the beginning. He bust up Martinezs nose and, combined with his emphasis on defence, he limited his success and was winning the early rounds. It was only when he ran out of gas and was unable to continue the boxing and moving, that he fell victim.
I doubt there were too many build-up threads when then MW Champion/top 10 p4p Jermain Taylor took on #8 rated Kassim Ouma. :conf Martinez vs. Macklin isn't really any bigger a deal than Taylor vs. Ouma was as far as "huge exciting events", let's be honest.
He won round 1 and 2 and maybe 1 or 2 rounds more later on. I think it was more of a matter that Martinez was somewhat figuring him out because you don't run out of gas after 2-3 rounds. I also thought he looked good in the first couple of rounds and thought this could be a hard fight for Martinez but then nothing more happened from Barker.
I never said he ran out of gas after 2-3 rounds. From what I remember, it was approximately 1-6 (maybe 7), where he was competitive. It's quite normal that after the halfway mark, a fighter who's shown stamina problems in the past, can begin to gas after adopting a strategy which involves a lot of moving around.
