Style-wise this seems an intruiging match up. Both fighters are agile and active. They are volume punchers who have excellent ring generalship combined with a solid punch. Actually this is a fight that fight fans deserve to see on HBO, because it spells fireworks and has potential to be a classic unification bout. Sergio Martinez has two big wins that might be enough to grant him Fighter of the Year, Pirog on the other hand had this scintillating win against Jacobs in the summer. After HBO pitted the plaster Marga against Pacman, I hope they will give the Russian a second chance to shine for the sake of the fans around the world. What's your opinion about this match up and its likelyhood to happen next year?
I reckon it's too early on in Pirog's career to be put against Martinez. His win against Jacobs was pretty good, but Jacob's wasnt exactly a heavily proven name and has since been branded a "hype-job." That's not to detract from Pirog's win though, he fought brilliantly and it's an excellent result but I think from both a boxing and a business perspective, he needs to gradually increase his rep and then step up. Late 2012, might be about right. Though there doesnt appear to be much scope in the division right now so I wouldn't be surprised to see it sooner. I wouldn't be suprised if we see him against Cotto next. Cotto deserves the "opportunity" and the money would be right for Sergio (not that he's the kinda character who seems to go straight for the cash).
You'd think HBO would want Pirog and Martinez to fight each other rather than have them continue to destroy the HBO fighters but they probably don't think there is enough money in it to bother.
pirog is a great fighter but it is way too early to have him fight martinez. move him up bit by bit. you dont go from jacobs to martinez!
Yes! make this fight happen! But I doubt it will happen and I doubt we will see pirog anymore on hbo.
I've been a little disappointed about the lack of news about Pirog. It's been nearly 4 months since the Jacobs knockout, and there's still no fight scheduled for him. He needs to be more active to keep the momentum rolling and increasing his profile...otherwise, it's just too easy for the other middleweights to simply not fight him.
Pirog should set his sights on working up to a Pavlik fight or PW first or a notch below then maybe one of the above how about earning a shot first?
