****, i'd watch this fight. Not a bad idea for Martinez at least, some name recognition. And if cotto wins, lineal mw championship?
He's also never fought a slick fighter like Martinez He also hasn't looked as good as he once was PRE-Margarito.
Against the only slick boxer - Foreman he did. Jennings is a slick Boxer (all be it not a good one) He destroyed them both. I don't think Cotto has declined at al personally. He always had a shaky chin. Watch torrez ad Juday fights. they had him all over the place. Margo won because to come forward fighters, and margo was bigger and tougher. And Manny is just a superior fighter.
If you don't think Cotto has declined, then you are in the minority. It was evident during the Clottey fight, that Cotto was not the same fighter he was before Margarito. Hell, even in the first 6 rounds of the Margarito fight, Cotto looked GREAT. From round 7 all the way up to his last fight, he hasn't looked the same pre round 7 of the Margarito fight.
Martinez wins this. Cotto has not been the same since the beating he took from Margo. Getting hit with plaster reinforced gloves for 11 rounds is bad for your career.
Even though I'm a Cotto fan I actually have no hard feelings towards Marg but if it gets proven that he did use plaster against Cotto, then that will change.
I know i'm in the minority on tht one. But in my head he struggled with clottes because Clottey is also a very good fighter who was in a 50/50 fight with Margo. Clottey has ony realy lost one fight convincingly and that was the Man Manny. Its just he boxes the same as he always has, throws great combos, looks just as quick and powerfull. His chin and defence is as bad as always. He still eats uppercuts to easilly and cuts too easilly. Same fighter in my mind. If he starts losing to fighters he shouldn't then i'll join the Cotto is declining badwagan.
I actually agree with JohnAnthony. I think fans of a tendency to write fighters off after they lose, and thereby discredit anybody who beats them after that first loss. We have to give fighters more credit for being resilient than that. That's not to say that Cotto is definitely the same as he was pre-Margarito, rather that he's not definitely *not* the same, either. He's just been fighting a steady stream of elite fighters, even after the Margarito fight, and when you step up your opposition that much, you're simply not going to look as good as you did when you were fighting weaker opposition. Margarito-Clottey-Pacquiao > Mosley-Judah-Gomez. I'd say give it another two fights to make a real judgment on whether or not he's really past it.
He destroyed Jennings. No vulnerability shown whatsoever so I didn't even bother including him. Clottey, whether you consider him elite or not, is a better fighter than anybody Cotto had been in the ring with pre-Margarito except Mosley, and I don't think the post-2004 Mosley is better than Clottey. I put them on about the same level, and their resumes over the past four years are about even.
