Fellas, Quick and direct, this rematch last Sat. night between "Martinez and Williams" at middleweight was to me a reversal of what transpired back in 1984 when Tommy Hearns SMOKED Roberto Duran at 154 pounds inside TWO (2) rds on PPV..... :deal Going in last Sat. night, I thought FO SHOW that Paulie Williams at 156 pounds was gonna waste Sergio Martinez who was 157 pounds... However, this time around, the taller, more slender man with the attributes of a 175 pounder got waxed inside the ring by the shorter and less gifted man... :hey Viva Martinez.....:good MR.BILL:hat Does anyone else see the comparison between the two fights from 1984 and 2010? :huh:think
I only see the resemblance in regards to the fighters ethnicity/race and their stature and heights. Martinez is no Duran and Williams is no Hearns.
No. Hearns/Duran was one sided from the start to the end. Martinez/Williams II was while it lasted a compitive bout that ended in an instant.
I don't really see. Interesting point of view though. The difference was that Hearns was kicking the **** out of Duran from the beginning, He already proved he had the power to drop Duran so a KO was not that surprising. In the Martinez - Williams 2 bout, both fighters were evenly matched in the first round, Martinez is known to have a decent punch but not one punch Ko power and Paul is known to have a granite chin. This bout ended with one punch that no one saw coming. One of the most shocking KO's I have ever seen.
I felt Duran was fine with Hearns until he was cut cut above the eye in round 1.. The cut bothered Duran in 1984... Duran was trying to wipe blood from his eye and he also was standing way too erect in facing the 6' 1" Hearns... Even Gil Clancy doing the telecast mentioned that Duran needed to get low on Hearns; not upright like a stick... Hearns went ahead and faked a jab to the body midway in round 1 that Duran bought, then came back with a steaming right to Duran's jaw... BOOM! Down went Duran... Duran got up, but the fight went to hell for Duran beginning at that moment... Duran got smoked like a Thai-stick joint from Hearns.... WORD! MR.BILL
True... But Hearns was age 25 with a 78" reach in 1984, while Duran was 33 the next day, *****-whipped galore and owning a mere 67" reach.... Of course Hearns was gonna win the battle of jabs... Plus, freaky as is, the 6' 1" Hearns made 153 3/4 pounds with ease, while Duran struggled to hit an even 154.... I swear to Amon Ra and the goddess Isis, Duran came into that Vegas ring looking like he just crawled outta bed with a couple of ho's.... Then he goes ahead and sits in his corner while awaiting Hearns to show up... Duran was there in body, but not in mind and spirit... He seemed to be counting that 2.5 million dollar check before the opening bell... NOW! Paul Williams has been a "Hot and Cold" fighter since I began eyeing him in 2006..... He's a front-runner who merely looks good when he can control the action against a weaker victim... If his foe has any strength or power, Williams folds like a lawn chair during the hot summer.... Williams is a lemon.... WORD! However, Martinez' age 35 does bother me.... How much time at the top does he truly have? MR.BILL:hat
When I saw the knockout the first thing I did was flashback to the Hearns-Duran KO. The way they both fell forwad like that. I honestly think that was the best one punch KO since Hearns-Duran.
No doubt both Duran and Williams were parked like Ford pick-up trucks in 1984 and here in 2010... MR.BILL
After about 10 seconds of their fight, you could tell Hearns was going to stop Duran. It was a beating from bell to bell. The Martinez ko came somewhat out of the blue, so I don't really see it. Also, I would definitely consider Sergio the more "gifted" fighter.
