He looked amazing against Chavez.. Minus the 12th round ofc. Well even in the 12th, he was amazing in another way :nod
Uh no. He was in danger for about a min but he didn't hold, he was fighting his heart out. He literally shut him out besides the 12th. He was THAT dominant in the fight.
I never argued that he didn't outbox him though, not sure why you keep saying this, it's a fact that he got badly hurt in the 12th though so that takes away from it.
I wouldn't say he was close to getting stopped, that's my point. Not sure why you're reaching. He was knocked down, yeah, but that's it. He still looked excellent in this fight despite the bad 12th round, so your point about him not looking good after Dzin is moot. Overall, it was an amazing performance by Sergio.
Martinez at his best was truly awesome, but all his injuries ended his career. The only reason Cotto beat Martinez was because of Martinez' injuries, Cotto would have had no chance against a healthy Martinez. Notice that Cotto refused to fight his WBC mandatory, Golovkin and is paying Golovkin step aside money so he can fight Alvarez, the winner will have to fight Golovkin or give up the title..................I think Alvarez will beat Cotto, probably by knockout or TKO, and Golovkin will knock out Alvarez, or Cotto...................but they will refuse to fight him, whatever, Golovkin will get a WBC title shot for the vacant title if Cotto runs again, or Alvarez..............
A few things contributed to his decline; age, style of fighting and injuries. Also he was light middleweight fighting at middleweight at the end of his career.
Yeah, Martinez at his best was truly awesome. I miss him big time.. I favored him against Floyd at 154. And at 160 he would have been the toughest challenge for GGG - What a fight it would had been. IMO the biggest reasons for his decline was his age. Those knee injuries come in time (hard training), Chavez fight had little to do with his knee problems. Injuries can be fixed but it is more difficult for older people.
Martinez was never that great to me. He fought in a weak middleweight era. He beat a Pavlik who Hopkins had just abused and humiliated. Macklin was putting some hands on him before he was stopped. Barker was putting some hands on him before he was stopped. Murray was putting hands on him en route to getting robbed. Martinez wasn't that great. He wouldn't have beaten Golovkin or Pirog.
