Martinez's path to Mayweather

Martinez too strong and just as fast as Mayweather 154-160lbs. The only advantage Floyd would have would be his superior skill, but if Martinez becomes the aggressive fighter like Judah did with Floyd, he can pull the upset. Martinez won't be tiring like Mosley did.

 

Sounds a plan. As you say, if Margarito's new invention is truly his new style for good, then Martinez will school him. His only chance would be to walk through everything Martinez throws and wear him down, and even that has a slim-chance of happening.

If he tries to box Martinez - a guy with superior technical skills, far greater speed and far greater movement, he may lose every round decisively, it would be completely one-sided.

I think he can beat Williams in a rematch too. I thought he edged the first fight although it was really a toss-up, but with a few alterations and more time to study Williams, I think he can exploit the defensive-gaps and sloppyness of PW's work.

Then a fight with Mayweather would be a great proposition for both sides and one that I'd love to see.

 

The problem I see is that Martinez has a very particular style. Hands down, moving in and out and pot shotting with lead left hands and right hooks. I think Floyd would struggle with the unorthodox approach and speed for the first few rounds, but would he then adapt?

I think to beat Mayweather you need to do a number of things. I think you need to show a versatile and confident jab to keep him off-balance and take him out of his rhythm, I think you need to show an adaptable style and a number of different styles, and I think you need to throw combinations in unpredictable fashion.

The trouble is, Martinez hasn't shown that much of a jab in his last few fights, although he has been fighting vastly taller guys, nor has he shown the ability to throw real combinations, other than a rather predictable double lead left-hand and right hook, which Floyd would be able to read and prepare himself for, although again he's been fighting bigger guys, maybe he would do so against the smaller Floyd.

 

He doesn't have to beat Margarito or Williams for anything, he just outperformed everything those two have ever done and now in the drivers' seat as the reigning champion at both middleweight and light-middleweight.

There are several fights Maravilla can choose from and only mandated for one (IF Pavlik can make 160 - unlikely), other than that, Margarito, Williams, Cintron, Sturm, Mayweather etc, they can all issue a challenge for either of Maravilla's championships and I'm sure Sergio will choose an exciting one! And I certainly hope so it will be Mayweather. It's pretty obvious Martinez couldn't care less what date, weight, venue, split, gloves, testing, ring size, gloves and suits Floyd would choose, he just wants to fight, others can sort these issues out.

Mayweather-Martinez on Floyd's terms with Williams-Margarito on the undercard would be an awesome show!

I think that the fight is going to happen. For some reason Mayweather has NO problem getting fights made when Arum is not part of the picture. Its a great fight for both guys.

 

Mayweather would want him to come down. Tough fight.

 

Martinez should get the fight next if the Paq. fight dosen't happen. I thought Martinez won the fight with Paul Williams. It was a close fight, but I thought he did enough to win. If Kelly P. can't make 160 and do the rematch, Martinez should fight P.W. again if Mayweather is not available
