Ok, I know this topic was already discussed, but I have been working 16 hour shifts, and didn't get to join in on the debate. Hopefully, some of you still have the stomach for it... ...anyway, I don't see how anyone can say Martinez landed the better shot, and this is coming from someone who was rooting for the guy. I've watched the KO several times, and in slow motion, and Martinez clearly kind of winged it. So what if he landed the same punch a few other times in the round? That means nothing. It was still more or less a lucky shot because of the way he landed it the final time. Martinez stepped to his right, and not even really looking, threw the punch out there. Maybe he hit what he was aiming for, but a shot like that could have just as easily NOT landed, or glanced. Pacquiao's shot is a different story. I've also watched that one several times...in slow motion, for multiple angles, and let me tell, THAT was a punch. From one angle, you can see Pac's eyes actually zero in on the target, then he shot the left hook out like a heat seeking missile. Hatton fell like he had been shot. So did PW, of course, but Hatton laid there for several minutes, and was unable to do a post fight interview. PW got up in less than a minute, and seemed just fine talking to Max afterward. One last point. There are several guys at that weight class who would have ate that shot Martinez landed....I guarantee you that nobody - and I mean NOBODY - in that weight class, or even one or two above would have survived that shot Pac landed. Mediocre punch power guy + granite chin opponent + early hail mary KO = LUCKY PUNCH! p.s. Sergio Martinez should be #3 p4p, and get Fighter of the Year and KO of the Year honors. :good
Williams has a good chin solid chin if you ask me, and one shot starched him... Martinez wins p.s. his last name is Martinez and NOT Williams...
If you look at a couple of the videos posted of different angles when Martinez was landing the left earlier in the round...it was clear what the gameplan was. He threw the left hand, he landed clean...it wasn't a lucky punch in my opinion. Pacquiao's KO was more impressive though. (Also, I always thought that the punch landed on Hatton would have knocked out guys in Welter or Light Middle...until I seen Pacquiao consistently land the same punch even harder on Margarito's chin. But then again, that could just be Margarito's chin).
Sergio threw a chin seeking missile, and it connected. He threw a big punch and expected it to hit Paul's chin - and it did. Williams has a good chin as far as i'm concerned, but that shot was monstrous. I agree that Pac's was better.
atschatsch Nonsense. Watch Maravilla's footwork. He quickly spots the gap, shuffles his feet quickly to get in position, and wings the shot at full power to get the KO. It was a calculated move. His eyes were closed due to the effort he put into it. Some people don't take into account footwork. :nono [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c6LAJ3V1KPI[/ame]
Pac on Williams? You mean Margarito? If I could be bothered searching through the fight just to make a gif I would...
Yeah Margo, I've watched the fight 3 times and at no point does PAC load up and land full blown on Tonys jaw with as much venom as he did Hatton. He hits him with some big shots but nothing compared to what sparked Ricky.
So how is Pac's better when Hatton had already been knocked out by Floyd? Williams is not only taller than Sergio (makes it a bit harder to land a shot) but had never been close to being knocked out. Also, Hatton had already been knocked down by Pac prior to him getting put to sleep whereas Williams was arguably WINNING against Sergio, and then all of a sudden ONE shot starched him. And another thing, Paul was/is a better fighter than Hatton was when he fought Pac. Not trying to diminish Pac's name. But all things considered Sergio's KO was a lot more impressive because he was fighting a complete beast.
Maybe not as clean...but harder? Yes. He hit Hatton with a near enough perfect shot, he hit Margarito harder. He lands the left hook consistently throughout the fight, and when he sat down on his shots in that fight...he hit with real power.
Where to start.... First off Williams isn't a beast, that's you buying the hype. Secondly Williams chin isn't grade A. Hatton took a shitload of fullforce power shots from Mayweather, probably more than any other fighter before the ko. So what if Hatton had been down in round 1. That shot would have sparked a fresh Hatton 5 seconds into the fight if it had connected. I've said on here before, Williams was overrated, his shitty 4 round showing vs Cintron showed this, the Martinez ko verified it. Good fighter, not a beast or great by any stretch of the imagination.
Lets see Hatton-shot KOd by PBF and saved by ref from Lazcano PW-never KO only Kd a couple of times How is Pac's more impressive again? Martinez said it himself they were timing him and the reason he stepped to the right was to avoid the right hook himself. Thats actually perfection.
Pac walked marg into that massive right hook in the 10th. If it had been his left hook marg would have dropped.
Tony, you posted in the poll...why didn't you just bump that thread? Anyways, I'll copy and paste what I said in that thread...and don't mind if you disagree, they're pretty even. hmmm, I'm bored and strangely feel like doing an analysis of them Event Obviously, the Pacquiao-Hatton fight was a successful PPV due to the large followings of both fighters and that both fighters had participated in large events. Martinez-Williams was a rematch of a FOTY candidate. Neither Martinez nor Williams has the following of Pacquiao or Hatton, so Pac's KO probably resonated on a larger scale. Chin Check Hatton had chin worries prior to the Pacquiao fight. In the last 5 years, Floyd has 1 T/KO...it's against Hatton...and he pretty much scored that TKO on check hook. Prior to that Hatton looked out on his feet in his match with Luis Collazo who is not much of a puncher himself. Paul has a good chin(but certainly not an iron chin as Kellerman seemed to suggest). As far as I know he had only been down once before in his career...also against Martinez off of a counter right hook. However, he came back in that fight and took some more serious bombs and finished comfortably. Drama It was pretty much a sure-fire thing that Pacquiao was going to get Hatton out of there midway through the first round. You knew Hatton was a goner. I don't think anyone expected how emphatic it might be, but you knew he was toast. Martinez known more for being a sharp puncher rather than a big puncher turned that shot short out of nowhere. There was no prior indication that this fight would end so quickly. There was no reason to believe that Martinez was going to turn Williams lights out so early in the fight(from Martinez 24 KOs to Pauls good chin, to the fact that it was a 1-punch out of nowhere). Spectacle They were both ****ing brutal. Verdict: Martinez KO via narrow decision Pac KO
