Seriously. You could tell Vanes had to force the words out during the interview, unbelieving them himself. The score shoulda been a lot closer.

    Soccer highlights.

For those of you desperate to see the highlights for the jaguares vs Cruz Azul now would be the time.

in all fairness this was clearly the best fighter Vanes has been in the ring with.

so going from fighting nobodies to a solid fighter that can take your best shots is quite a reality check.

Vanes gets owned by Sergio and Paul Williams. I'd love to see him in there with Cintron but Freddy doesn't like to put prospects in with big punchers (rightly so I'd say).

I liked this fight. It at least showed that Vanes is ready fro the next level. But it also showed us that he is likely not very special for elite level fighters.

Martirosyan has looked like a monster up to this point. Ouma made him look very ordinary. I've followed this kid for a few fights, and this was by far the worst performance I've seen.

Ouma is clearly not shot like a lot of us thought. I was rooting for Vanes, but scored the fight 97-96 for Ouma.

^ yeah but Vanes has been wanting this step up in class (the Ouma fight) so realistically who can Vanes fight in the 154 division at this point?

he's kinda talked himself up to wanting to fight the best, and Kassim Ouma was a step in the right direction

    so what's next for Vanes?

I still think Vanes won. Absolutely agree that the scores were a joke but those of you acting surprised shouldn't be. This is Top Rank, their up and coming stud and he's in the main event. Should've seen it coming.

If I had to plot the next course for Vanes, it would be an easier fight against someone NOT named Kassim Ouma. Probably somebody who could potentially give him a good show but allow him to fix whatever defencies he had. The only way he's going to get better is if he's forced to improve his weaknesses against the kind of opponent who could challenge him. Eromosele Albert is pretty much the first name that comes to mind.

Edit: I just thought about Daniel Santos. That's a decent choice. Santos is faded/fading, inactive and looked incapable of doing anything against Yuri Foreman.

Before the fight I said Vanes should fight Grady Brewer next just to have that experience of facing a cagey guy. After tonight I'm not sure he's ready for Brewer. I think he would get out boxed badly. The kid is not near as good as I thought.

but don't you tend to agree with Vanes self criticism post fight? Vanes certainly didn't think he fought to the best of his ability and mentioned straying from the game plan

and I noticed as well as the commentators that Vanes had more success when he used movement + punching

because going toe to toe with someone who can take your best shots isn't a smart game plan. and I don't think Freddie would want Vanes to be fighting Ouma that way.
