Hagler moved to Italy where he concentrated on learning the Italian language and entered the acting business. He tried to become an action-adventure movie-star in Italy. Sounds weird but thats what a young Clint Eastwood did after the western series, Rawhide that he starred in, was cancelled. It worked for Clint. He became a film legend with his spaghetti westerns like, "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly." I don't know how Marvin fared however. Maybe some of our Italian boxing friends on this forum can tell us if he's a movie star over in Italy or not.
You've said it yourself as you've admitted that Hagler was a great middleweight, but I've yet to read on anyone else's posts on this site that Hagler was invincible.Even most of his biggest fans put him top 5.And besides the Hearns victory,Hagler's best victories were against the tough Philly middleweights in the late 70s.
Greatest MW in history imo. He was everything a fighter should be - dedicated, passionate, humble but confident, never underestimated anyone. Money made Hagler wealthy, fame made him a somewhat of a superstar in the boxing world, but neither changed him in that he always remained dedicated & still trained in isolation, away from people, to just focus on the next bout he had scheduled. He's one of my favourite fighters of all time & if he was around today, he would no doubt be putting big pressue on his peers in the ring. Hagler was like a lump of steele, always, always properly conditioned, well trained. Now there was a guy that literally did think about his opponent & nothing else when in training. Even in interviews to promote a certain fight, you can see the intensity in his eyes, like he's frustrated the fight cannot happen sooner! Lastly, a sad memory is way he was treated in the aftermath of his victory over Minter. Those who threw bottles & abused him that night should be ashamed of themselves. Hagler always showed class & class is something those fans on that night know nothing about!
One of the best ever MWTs no doubt but ranks beneath Leonard in a p4p sense & loses to the Robinson that TKO`d Lamotta on his best day. Great fighter tho.
I had 7-5 Leonard, a draw is the best you could give MMH IMO, he lost 5 of the 1st 6 rds on my card (he won rd 5)
imo hes the personification of the word fighter,he was an awesome fighter,a true atg & one of my faves.
One my all time fav's and one of the most complete fighters of all time. Could fight effectively from both the orthodox and southpaw stance. What people don't really know is that Hagler was naturally right handed, but chose to fight out of the southpaw stance. His right hand was truly his power hand, he would tear guys faces to pieces with it, not to mention he had a hell of left hook to go along with. This made it rather difficult for guys to judge distance and gain rhythm as they thought that circling to their left (away from the left hand, which theoretically is the correct thing against the unorthodox stance) would allow them to fight safely away from his power and use the right hand. But, his right jab was truly one of the best in his history as he would batter men with it setting up the left hook and right uppercuts. It was evident in both his bouts with Sibson and Skypion where he destroyed them with his right hand.
He was a well conditioned athlete that wore fighters down. I lost alot of respect for him when he was bought off by leonard. That fight just looked hokie to me. Hagler to me was putting on a WWF show that night and not trying to hurt leonard. If you believe that fight was legit, what do you think HOPKINS woulda done to HAGLER?
How Hagler won the MW title in front of a racist British crowd. Announcer gets hit with fying beer (cans and bottles). [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z184W81eVo0[/ame]
Wheni started to make the switch from Boxing Fan to Boxing Freek, the first vid i bought was the fab 4 years ago, about the fab 4 of course. I knew Hagler and Hearns had fought but hadn't seen the fight, and didn't know about the nature of it. So for me that fight was a surprise just like it was for people watching live, well almost. Anyway, Hagler is a likeable man for me because of his being a machine in terms of dedication.
My first Hagler fight was Marvin and Vito antifurmo I thought Mqrvin won but Vito fought so dogedly bloody hard he got a draw I was a huge fan ever since.
At the time i thought Marvin won, and was seriously pissed. Vito was mob connected, and I swore up and down that was the reason for the draw. Years later I watched the fight from a less passionate perspective and totally understood the draw. Marvin gave away the last couple rounds.
