Marvelous Marvin - was he ruined by John 'The Beast' Mugabi?

I can only conclude that the answer to this question is a resounding YES!

Having gone to war with Tommy Hearns the previous year in arguably the greatest ever Middleweight Title showdown, the Marvelous one went head to head with the fantastically strong Mugabi, who, at the time thought he was invincible.(as did most of the boxing world.)

Totally unintimidated, 'the Beast' went toe to toe with Hagler, even having the temerity to eyeball the champion before and after a wild first round set-to, and continued to exchange leather for 6 evenly fought rounds, before Hagler started to shatter his resolve with some sickening blows, and finally breaking him down in the 11th of a truly titanic bout.

Neither fighter was ever the same again.

Hagler, a debatable loser in many observers books, simply didn't impose himself enough on Sugar Ray Leonard in their 'superbout' the following year, giving away too many rounds before 'waking up' late on, by which time Sugar Ray's dazzling, round - stealing antics had left a bemused Hagler chasing a fight he never really got to grips with.

Mugabi, meanwhile, never won another meaningful fight after the Hagler clash, becoming nothing more than a stepping stone for hungry young fighters like Duane Thomas, Gerald McClellan & Terry Norris.

Extraordinary really, when you consider that these two warriors were at their primes when they came together that fateful night back in March '86......

Nah, the collection of fights was causing Hagler's decline. He looked pretty bad against Roldan, the talk around that time in boxing was that he was declining, and that was before Hearns. Hagler fought great against Hearns, but after having 60-something pro fights, he was starting to decline anyway.

I also don't think the Mugabi fight was that close. Hagler took his share of punishment, especially to the body (both guys pissed blood), but Hagler for the most part beat Mugabi up. He jabbed Mugabi silly and then outfought Mugabi on the inside in the latter rounds.

Do they make them like Hearns anymore? He was the true beast.

In response to the thread title - No !

The Mugabi war never helped his body but the Marvin that fought Sugar Ray would have beat Mugabi in just the same way.

Was Hagler at his absolute peak for Mugabi & Leonard ? No !

Was he still good enough to deserve to be called the best p4p fighter in the world ? Yes !

Marvin himself said he was not the same after Mugabi. I heard it with my own ears on ESPN Ringside Classics.

Mugabi might've been the icing on the cake but it was on a very big cake filled with wars of that sort.

Mugabi was just the more recent one.

Perfect contri.Perfect.Roldan got an official knockdown, but Hagler looked to be off-balance when he was moving.Roldan was landing shots he had no right to.It was obvious that Marvin was past it and starting to slide downward as his ability to block and get out of the way of punches was beginning to diminish rapidly.Read this book:SORCERY AT CAESARS:SUGAR RAY'S MARVELOUS FIGHT by Steve Marantz.I remember about 90% of the events as if it were yesterday. It clearly and truthfully described how Leonard always spoke about a possible Hagler fight, but kept biding his time until it was obvious that Hagler was shot, which is exactly what happened.

No you didnt, stop lying, even Rooster doesnt give this fight to Hagler, if you dont know who rooster is, ask around, he posts in the classic section & pops up to criticise SRL in every thread with his name in it.

Hagler & his fans are the sorest losers Ive ever come across, seriously.

The Mugabi-Hagler fight finished Mugabi, and aged Hagler. That fight was the fist time I ever saw Hagler hurt in a fight...and not to the chin. Sugar saw Hagler slowing down, and took the fight. Does Sugar fight a prime Hagler...no. I thought Sugar beat Hagler, but Hagler was 32 and on his way out of boxing anyway imo. Very good thread topic!

Yeah Hagler looked much more hittable against Roldan, and later Mugabi, than usual. I think Hagler's parrying and slipping skills were good and overlooked, as he wasn't an easy target to catch, but slow ass Roldan was hitting him with consistency. You could of course chalk it up to being an "off night", but it's perfectly reasonable that someone with 60+ pro fights and who's been fighting at a high level for long is going to start to decline.

Despite Leonard, by his own admission, waiting until Hagler had declined before fighting him, I refuse to totally discredit his win (which I scored even) over Hagler. Leonard was no spring chicken himself, jumping up in weight, and hadn't fought a pro fight in 3 years (and just once in 5).

There is no lying here. Many people, myself included, feel that Leonard did not do enough to win the fight. You can't win a title by running and looking pretty, which is what happened. And,the sorest losers are Hatton and his fans.
