Yup. He was getting hit frequently by Mugabi because he didn't have the footspeed and reflexes anymore. If he didn't have a granite chin, Mugabe would have knocked him out.

Like others said it was the accumulation of fights but if it wasn't for him declining around this time Leonard would not have fought him. He admitted as such.

I leave 4 damn near 10 years and u still have enjoyable nonsensical posts. Don't ever change.

Like why he wanted to fight Hagler when he did.

Hagler got screwed over his whole life. Especially compared to fast tracked popular silver spoon boxers like SRL.
Its fitting in that sense that it ended the way it did.

Srl was commentating on every Hagler fight troughout the years. Lurking at the opportinty when he would finally show weakness to capitalize on it.

He even befriended him to keep him close to find the right time.
Either a machiavellian at best or a snake in regard to Marvin.

But for a working class boxing fan Marvin Hagler is easily one of my favourite fighters ever cause of his struggle. They never wanted him to make it and he did. In my book he is the greatest middleweight ever, beat every opponent he faced and is the definition of hard work.
All that work and those fights would eventually start slowing him diwn. It wasnt just Mugabi of course.

I think Hagler was declining after the Hearns war. He wasn't prime against Mugabi and SRL saw it and pounced.

Well, it's *a* post. I think we can all agree on that.

...No one out here has been able to debunk it...I think that should give you some pause, T. You should stop by more often. I will convert you. :periodico:

PS: I chose an emoticon that doesn't really fit but I couldn't see where the ornery eyebrows emoticon was. So, you get this one. If I've learned anything from my parents and their parents before them, it's to settle.

I am of two minds on this. I see the aforementioned snakesmanship of Leonard with regard to Hagler and Duran, and I somewhat take his words at face value in some strategizing with his fights there, but I also accept he took enormous fights and won fair and square in them against legends, and suspect that he plays up his outwitting guys outside the ring because he thinks it makes him look smarter, as opposed to defeating someone less than they should've been.

I think he thinks it does him a favour, relative to a perception that he's a mastermind, but it actually is unfair to him, in putting his wins in accurate context, and, in some ways, a bit overly generous to his opponents, in giving them an excuse they don't even need. Well, no, that Hagler doesn't need and Duran was sorely needing, I guess. Maybe he doesn't fight Hagler if Mugabi didn't happen, but it was still a horrendously risky fight to take for him and if he'd gotten run over and they both retired for good, maybe people would just shrug and be like "Well, sure, yeah. Great, great, fighter, but of course Hagler was a step too far, under his circumstances." instead of "Jeez, he should've won. Look at what Mugabi was doing to him before that. Leonard dropped the ball big time there." I don't think many people would be in the latter camp. I'm sure some, because I never underestimate stupid, but only some.

I'm not done with my first cup of coffee, so it's possible I think this is coherent and when I read it back later it's going to look like a Charlie Brown teacher rant. But I'm going to take that chance. Because I trust you guys to be vulnerable. (sniff)

He ran away from the Hearns rematch - we all know this. At least Ray went again. Hagler ran away wearing tightie whites in shyte Italian film

Emoticon makes me think its dropping deuces on the toilet? I ask that anyone replying to me hold thy bowel movement until after they reply. Gimmie an application an I'll go from there. Definitely worse cults to join lol.

It was a fight Leonard didn't even need to take but even as a Hagler fan I thought he took Ray lightly n should've pressed the issue more. Then again maybe he gave it all he could but regardless I always judge it for SRL but that's just me n my frustrations but also honesty.

No I don't think Hagler got "robbed" but, like Duran, I don't think he wanted to admit that there's things he could've done better when fighting Ray. Not Ray's fault. Tho I am aware that from watching Legendary Nights(and I'm sure from other interviews) that he's said post Mugabi was the best time to fight Hagler bcuz he was declining. Still a gamble to make but that comment always irks me.
