In all of his fights from 1980 to 1983, including against Duran, Hagler was very much a finished and complete product. He actually has a fair list of impressive victories that could each be argued as his peak performance: Obelmejias I & II (refined aggression, a fleeter footed 'Hearns mode') Hamsho I (boxing and moving clinic) Sibson (balanced, powerful counterpunching) Antuofermo II (supremely aware of Antuofermo's style) Scypion (knew to stay down, strong but outclassed) Minter (upon close inspection you realise Minter was helpless) With some runners up: Lee (short and unstoppable) Hamsho II (slowing but extremely vengeful) Hearns (again, slowing, but with more purpose than ever) Demmings, Watts II, Hart, Hamani, Briscoe, Seales III, Monroe II and W@rren - smaller notches dealt with in consistent style.
Good thing for him; his left cross was wide and inaccurate all night long. I thought that while it was an exciting fight, Hagler's slip was definitely showing there. His movement was minimal, his left was arcing and wide and missed a wide-open target repeatedly........had he not had that insane chin of his, he'd probably have lost that night.
Those were some shots, though! The skill factor was still of course mostly on Hagler's side in that fight, but he took some hellacious punches to get to the point where he could start systematically breaking Mugabi down. Remember that uppercut in the fourth round? Ugh.......right on the money, a perfect, crushing shot, and Hagler took maybe, MAYBE a half step back and then just said "**** you." I love that story.
