RIP to the Marvelous one. You were a man's man. The champ the establishment didn't want but still couldn't stop. You were the epitome of toughness and that chin of yours is still the gold standard in boxing. You'll be missed.
So it is true. RIP champion. You embodied everything great about the sport. Haglers career should be studied by all fighters to show how how their career should be conducted. Only problem being that a fighter needs to be as tough, determined, driven and as damn good as Marvellous to come close to emulating his career and there’s only been a couple of those in 100+ years of boxing.
Not all fighters deserve or live up to their nicknames. Here's one who did, and then some. Was genuinely shocked upon hearing this. Sensational fighter and always seemed like a good bloke, too. A legitimate legend of the sport. R.I.P Marvin.
One of my favorite fighters of all time, a man who earned everything in his career, demonstrated toughness, skill and class and will always be in the discussion for the greatest Middleweight of all time. Gone far, far too soon.
Saw it on twitter while dining with a friend who is in town. While I was driving home, ESPN radio did a segment on it memorializing him with the two hosts running down highlights and then went on and on about the Hearns fight. I’m a little numb. Too soon. If you look up professional boxer in an encyclopedia, Hagler is one who qualifies to have his picture next to the phrase. Same with champion. He truly was Marvelous, even though he was old-school, blue-collar in his approach. Lefty. Righty. Could brawl. Could trade big shots. Could box. In baseball you’d call him a five-tool player because he was adept (and beyond) in every facet of the game. And I don’t think any fighter was more consistently well-conditioned. He toiled to win the title and took it the hard way, and he did not want to let go of it. No ticket-buyer or viewer could walk away from seeing MMH fight and think that guy cheated them of a nickel by not being prepared or giving his all. Rest In Peace, champ. I miss you already.
This. I always loved his back story and he never disappointed in the ring. I haven’t met one person young or old, who wasn’t in awe of his first round war with Hearns.
I've just heard that he died. I had the TV on in the background (without the sound on) and looked up and saw his face on the screen. I immediately feared the worst, turned the sound on and it was confirmed. It's very sad and also unexpected. Hagler always seemed fit and very well, especially considering the length of his career, so I always imagined he would be around for a good few years to come. Sadly, that wasn't the case. Rest in peace, champ.
I feel awful, he was one of my all time favorite fighters, everything about him, his personality, his fighting style, his look, everything about this man just clicked with me. Absolutely terrible news. My condolences to his family and loved ones, rest in piece champ.
I'm heartbroken. Watching Hagler-Hearns as a pre teen on ESPN Classic helped make me a boxing fan for life. You can now rest easy champ, the 15th round has ended, your victory in this life and the next is assured.
I am devastated upon hearing this horrible news. Hagler was always one of my favorite boxers to watch and watching him box was like watching a work of art. He can fight going forward, going backward, and can switch stances. Hagler can box and punch. He was a complete boxer. Hagler will, and always be among the greatest middleweights of ALL TIME and will forever be among boxing's all-time greats. When you hear the great middleweight legends like Robinson, Greb, LaMotta, Ketchel, Burley, Monzon, you will always hear Hagler's name among them legends. Us fans will always appreciate the excitement and discipline that he brought to the sport, inspiring thousands of young boxers to take the sport. Hagler was a class act both in and out of the ring. I take my hat off to this great great legend Marvelous Marvin Hagler and he is truly MARVELOUS.
Terrible sad news! I just watched the Facing Ali dvd about a week ago, and the only fighters still alive are Chuvalo, Foreman, and Holmes.
