Hagler would have stopped him eventually.

Hagler was a strong middleweight with a long reach. Leonard got him when he was unmotivated and inactive, but a mid 1980s Hagler would have probably won in the late rounds by TKO.

Leonard definitely didn't fight the best version of Hagler, and in my view, quality counted as much as quantity, and that's why i've always seen that fight as a draw.

Kalambay had trouble with southpaws and Hagler is the ultimate southpaw.

    Hagler by TKO

Do you think Kalambay would have stood a chance against the Hagler that fought Leonard?

I think Kalambay would have beaten that Hagler clearer than Leonard did. Can't see anything Leonard did better at MW than prime Kalambay.

If we're talking peak Hagler of the early 80's I think I would pick him. His showing against Duran really gives me pause, though.

Actually, I'd say that Kalambay beat a better MW in McCallum than Hagler ever did. Hell, even Graham was probably as good as anyone Hagler beat, bar possibly (but only possibly) Hearns.

**** it, I'm going with Sumbu here come to think about it.

Sumbu has a chance against Hagler of 87 but any other time Hagler would stop him late on, but i think Kalambay at his best would have given Hagler a good fight.

This is a fight that a primed Marvelous Marvin Hagler would both need the full 15-round distance and would have to train hard for a good 15-rounds for in order to get the best of a primed and durable Sumbu Kalambay.

I'm amongst those who voted Hagler by knockout/tko victory but at the same time I'm most certainly am not going to ignore Kalambay's craftiness inside the ring. His victories over an undefeated redhot Mike "The Bodysnatcher" McCallum, as well as subsequent victories against Iran Barkley(15-round decision in what was the WBA's last sanctioned title fight to go 15-rounds before it went to 12-round championship distant rule and one year before Barkley scored major ko wins over Tommy Hearns and Michael Olajide), Robbie Sims, Doug DeWitt and an undefeated Herol Graham says it all. But Marvin gets Sumbu out of there by late rounds knockout.

Marvelous Marvin Hagler ko12 or ko13 Sumbu Kalambay.

My friend, I didn't say that Kalambay had a good chance of knocking out Hagler after all I did say that I was amongst the majority who voted on the poll Hagler by ko/tko. I was just stating a fact that Kalambay had a very crafty and elusive style as witnessed in his fights against McCallum(first fight), Sims, DeWitt, Barkley and Graham, and all at their best. And in stating those facts I was simply saying that Marvin in his prime against someone like Kalambay in order to be at his best and more would have to train hard for a good 15-round fight and be in his always best of physical condition in order to look good against the Kalambay that was at his best.

I think Hagler has a good technical style for beating cuties and lighter hitting finesse fighters, but his sometimes dubious ring-generalship could make things quite interesting if he lets himself get a bit flustered early on.

i don't think he would stop Kalambay(possible but not likely imo) who's too tough to hit twice in a row consistently once he settles in and not vulnerable to hooks(Marv's straight left was never much of a power shot).More likely it would be an Ortiz vs Laguna \Duran vs Dejesus kind of dynamic, with Hagler's greater versatility and deadly jab overcoming raw finesse, but hagler would have a better chance of not losing one than those two because he's always in top shape\thoroughly focused and Kalambay would have a much better chance at not getting smsahed to bits late as he doesn't fade like Esteban.
