    STRONGEST
Mugabi and Tony Sibson: I remember seeing Tony Sibson at the weigh-in. This guy was strong. I remember when he hit me on the chest, he looked much stronger and bigger than me, and he’s supposed to be a middleweight. Mugabi, I believe he put on more weight before the fight. I could feel his body against me. He felt like a light heavyweight, he didn’t feel like a middleweight. When he threw punches, they were all deadly, very hard punches. This guy felt like a light heavyweight to me, so I had to wear him down, to take away some of that strength.

Is Hagler correct here? Was Mugabi a boiled down fighter who put on a lot of post weigh in weight? Mugabi wouldn't make the 154 limit for a few years after the Hagler bout, but made it at 29 years of age. If he was that big at the weight you'd think that wouldn't have been possible.

    Thoughts?

I don't know about his weight, but at the end of the first round he threw a left hook that missed. That punch was whipped. It had to sound like a 30-06 round going by.

Mugabe made 154 lbs in his very next fight after Hagler.

It is possible he gained many pounds after the weigh in, but weigh ins were the morning of the fight back then so it is unlikely he gained enough to literally be a LHW at fight time.

Hagler is just saying Mugabi was very strong, one of the strongest fighters he ever faced. It is possible .Mugabe was just a very strong Middleweight. From watching his fights, it is evident he was physically strong.

Part of that is due to his strength. -- not easy to back him up+

well when he either swung and won or got hit and was knocked out. I think had he fought Hearns in March of 1986, I think Tommy stops him. Hagler was not the puncher Hearns was. I think Mugabi was strong and if he landed on someone he could hurt them.

If he thought Mugabi and Sibson were huge, I'd love to hear his thoughts on Danny Jacobs, Jermall Charlo, Peter Quillin, etc.

Hagler on the size of Mugabi and Sibson was talking about just how powerful they looked....this is same day weigh in fights era where at the most within the time between weigh in and fight fighters might gain 5-6lbs where today middleweights are dehydrated LtHeavyweights.....both of them were big for the weight Mugabi was thick and strong like a small Samuel Peter and Sibson had a barrel chest I remember when he fought John Collins it looked like a boy vs a man and of course he steam rolled him......MMH is the fighter who took the fight out of Mugabi he beat him and shrugged off his hardest punches that Mugabi could have beaten alot of top fighters in that fight but after he was

I think part of the answer is that Hagler could have fought at 154 if he really wanted. A lot of people ask if he should have fought Spinks, Qawi, etc at 175. Hagler trained so hard that I can't picture him gaining the weight to fight at lightheavyweight, it would have been easier for him to fight at junior middleweight.

Mugabi fought at and around 154 both before and after the Hagler fight. He seemed to have little trouble making that weight. He actually weighed in at 157 for Hagler, smack between junior middle and middle. Obviously he carried plenty of power at both weights regardless. For me he looked taller than he actually was and had a fairly big frame.

Those guys wouldn't try to make 160 in those days. Without that extra time to rehydrate.

True. It's tough to even match up the modern fighters against the past because they are really from different weight classes due to same day weighins
