How would you rate their skills, offensively/defensively?
And who do you think was the more exciting fighter in your opinion?

Hagler more skilled in just about every department.

Don't know who would say is more exciting...probably Marv. I have a soft spot for the Commander but Hagler is just a little bit better overall.

Holyfield was better, greater, and more exciting.

Hagler's changes of stances and changes of timing completely befuddled Minter and Sibson, and his jab against Hamsho was phenomenal - trebling it or throwing it as hard as a cross. He was so subtle and discreet at slipping as well to be more stunning with counters, esp in the Hamsho fight, and so subtle and discreet at moving left instead of right, esp in Monroe III where he only changed direction while slightly on the retreat out of respect for Willie's long hard cross. The most underrated thinker ever for me. He was all thought.

Holyfield was all sharp combinations, rarely throwing less than two at a time. He had a very good double jab and threw more mid-range orthodox right hooks that any fighter in history. He could also stand still in the pocket and trade bomb for bomb with anyone. He lacked weaknesses but wasn't exceptionally skilled, just effective and stubborn.

I think Hagler was a half-a-class above, or a class above. But Holyfield was definitely more exciting, when taking away the one fight Hagler-Hearns.

+1 And I'm an original Hagler fan.

Holyfield was outweighed by quite a bit in nearly all of his fights after vacating the cruiserweight division.

I would rate Hagler higher in skills and Holyfield higher in excitement. Just look at how many exciting fights Evander has been part of.

Holyfield a crude boxer, a swing for the fences type who could be incited to brawl. Hagler more sphisticated style, harder to figure out, smarter, better on defense, more mobile, efficient attack, etc

Holyfield a crude boxer? I don't think so. You don't give up consistent weight and age disadvantages and become 4 time heavyweight champion as a crude boxer.

Hagler put his punches together better than Evander. Just overall a little better.

Hagler never put a finishing salvo together like Holyfield did right here (starting at 2:49, starting with a right hand). Never mind the combination at 1:49.

And if you contrast this video to the earlier video I posted (Holyfield-Douglas). It's quite apparent how much Holyfield had deteriorated by '98.. yet he still put together combo's like that. He was really a great boxer.

watch Tony Sibson, Hamsho. all his defenses. I love Evander Holyfield, but when comparing them, Marvin comes out ahead if you are comparing the heavyweight Evander to the middleweight Marvin.
