hagler today is not even a regular mw, he is a super welter, he weighed 158 pounds in his prime, and he was muscular, he did not have big frame

    Interesting fight.

Hagler was a rock solid MW. 5'9 1/2" with a 75" reach, his highest weight was 163. He would have still been a rock at 168. Calzaghe stands 5'11" with a 73" reach. He was in good shape at 168 but I wouldn't use the word "rock" to describe him.

Hagler went 62-3-2 (52) overall and 13-1-1 (12) in MW World Title fights. He was recognized as the World Champ at MW. He was down just once in 67 pro fights but that knockdown is questionable to say the least (Juan Roldan). His 3 losses were all close decisions. A case can be made that he should have went 67-0 (52) in his career.

Let's look at his losses and draws-

D10 Sugar Ray Seales. He beat Seales in their first fight, W10 and stopped Seales in their third fight, KO1.

Bobby Watts LMD10. He stopped Watts in their rematch, KO2.

Willie Monroe L10. He stopped Monroe in both of their rematches, KO12 and KO2.

Vito Antuofermo D15. He stopped Antuofermo in their rematch, KO4.

Sugar Ray Leonard LSD12. They never fought again but Hagler wanted a rematch badly. A lot of people thought Hagler won this fight.

    He also beat-

Eugene Hart W8, Bennie Briscoe W10, Alan Minter KO3, Fulgencio Obelmejias KO8 and KO5, Mastafa Hamsho KO11 and KO3, Caveman Lee KO1, Tony Sibson KO6, Wilford Scypion KO4, Roberto Duran W15, Juan Roldan KO10, Thomas Hearns KO3, and John Mugabi KO11 among others.

He was a great boxer/puncher. He had a great chin, great stamina, power in both hands, quickness, and was a great overall fighter... and could do it as a southpaw or in an orthodox stance. There isn't a fighter in the MW division during his title reign who deserved a title shot and didn't get it.

Calzaghe went 46-0 (32) overall and 22-0 (11) in SMW world title fights. He was only recognized as the World Champ at SMW toward the end of his career. A case can be made that he was the Lineal LHW Champ after his SD win over 43 year old Bernard Hopkins. Calzaghe was down vs. Byron Mitchell, Kabary Salem, Bernard Hopkins, and Roy Jones Jr. (who was 2 months shy of his 40th birthday). He also beat-

Chris Eubank W12 (Eubank's last fight at SMW, he had already lost twice to Collins), Robin Reid WSD12, Omar Sheika KO5, Richie Woodhall KO10, Mario Veit KO1 and KO6, Charles Brewer W12 (Brewer was past prime and it was closer than the cards suggest), Jeff Lacy W12, Sakio Bika W2, and Mikkel Kessler W12 among others.

He was a very good fighter, maybe even great, but his resume is not filled with the fighters who should be on it. If he had fought those fighters would he have retired undefeated? He should have fought Thomas Tate and Sven Ottke for starters. He should have fought Charles Brewer several years before he did.

Hagler by decision. I think Hagler drops him in the early rounds but I do think Calzaghe would last the distance and give Hagler a a good fight.

Size didn't bother Hagler much with Obel, Hearns, and he mastered other six footers like Seales and Boogaloo. Regarding how he dealt with physically strong southpaws, we saw what he did to Minter and Hamsho. (Seales was a southpaw as well.) Mustafa and Fully both moved up in weight after twice being unable to deal with Marv.

MMH was a straight puncher with his long right jab, and in an unusual situation for a southpaw, his right was his power hand.

Only Antuofermo could make him gas in their championship distance draw, but Vito had beer kegs for lungs. Otherwise, Hamsho I and Mugabe ended in 11, Colbert was knocked out in 12, and Marv clinched Duran with rounds 14 and 15.

Who wins isn't the question, but how Hagler does it.

Marv rips joes head clean off and throws it to the crowd.

and then discovers its a joe lookalike because joe is waiting in Cardiff until marv turns 40something.

Most people seem to favour Hagler (myself included). Does Hagler defeat the likes of Mikel Kessler and Bernard Hopkins?

    What about Andre Ward?
