this is sheer nonsense and a myth to cover his inadequacies. leonard always got gassed in fights

he got gassed in the first Duran fight, the Hearns fight, the Bonds fight

If he was really gassed after 5, he wouldve lost every round thereafter

Just plain DUMB! cant u come up with a better excuse?

you don't knock someone out in the 14th round if you're gassed.

why does Powerpuncher say that Leonard was gassed after five rds? how could he be gassed after seeing rds 9,12?

he didnt look gassed to me. a little tired but Leonard gets tired in all his fights. Leonard even said he was spent in the Benitez fight and all he did was stare at the other guy

also look at the other big fights Duran, Hearns

he lost cuz he couldnt match Duran's work rate and Duran was already 29 & carrying xs weight

Has Leonard even claimed that he could have beaten a prime Hagler 82/3? Some of the SRL fans here are more confident than the man himself. Everything I've read and heard from Leonard post Hagler fight was how he saw Hagler had slowed during the Mugabi fight and that was the motivation for him to come back. The man doesn't hide it. Even in the post fight interview in 87 he stated "this time it was a younger guy coming back to fight an older guy" in explaining the 'victory'. He explained in interviews how he invited Hagler to his restaurant and gleaned admissions from Hagler about how wasn't the same fighter anymore and didn't have the same motivation. This is well documented. Again, Leonard doesn't hide this. His belief that he could beat Hagler was based on Hagler's obvious deterioration.

It's pretty simple really. Leonard didn't fight Hagler in 82 because he didn't feel he could win ( and who could blame him- Hagler was young, quick, supremely talented, lethal, and a natural middleweight). He did fight him in 87 because he felt he could win. Nothing complicated or controversial here.

I must concur even tho others here arent nearly as honest with themselves.

I did of hear elated shouts of "I can beat him!"

it's funny how he never said it doing Hagler fights for HBO from ringside

1982 Hagler? I don't think Sugar Ray moving up in weight would have beaten him. Aside from the cut stoppage against Minter, Hagler was in fine form at that time coming off some solid wins.

Ray might last the 15 round distance unless he gets stopped earlier. There's a reason why Leonard put off this fight until 87.

Leonard dictates a 155-pound weight limit and wins going away by decision as MMH fades

For me, this post nails the thread completely, imo it's the absolute truth of the matter.

    Excellent post.

    ok, he was.

but, and bear with me here...he'd have bulked up in that year for hagler, he wouldnt have gone in at 147....also, would it be fair to say that 1982 leonard beats 1987 leonard ?...if so, the 'smaller' argument doesn't hold.

    i worded that badly.

and i'm not suggesting for a second that leonard would have beat hagler in 82 mind.

Thanks, unlike some of his fans, Leonard actually isn't delusional.
