Still baffled as to how Hagler only got a draw out of this one. Granted he took his foot off the gas in the latter stages and Vito came on strong, yet surely Marvin had built up a comfortable points cushion to take it.
I had it 8-7 for Hagler, so I didn't have a real problem with the draw decision. The writer for the Associated Press scored it 143-142 for Antuofermo, so the controversy continues. I wonder how the magazines scored it at the time, like Ring or Boxing Illustrated? Scartissue

Hagler was too cautious late on, and back then (rightly IMO) any benefit of the doubt went to the champion. Hagler could *****, but the draw (for the time) was a fair result.
Very poor verdict. Hagler was cautious because he thought he had the fight in the bag. Maybe he shouldn't have been, but his margin should have been wide enough to win the title. Judges can't just cross their scoring out from the earlier rounds because late on in the fight if they think "hmm, maybe he hasn't done enough to take the title away". Even if they thought that in the final few rounds, their cards should have still had Marvin in a big enough lead when he did fight like he was 'taking' the title.
To me Hagler just didn't act like he wanted the Championship.......where Vito, as limited as he was in skill, very much wanted to continue to be champion. I was disappointed that Hagler didn't win, but I was not surprised at the result back when I saw it live on TV.
That was the way I saw it. He would go on to have a Marvelous career, but sometimes Hagler (and the Petronelli's) failed to grab the initiative enough in important fights, and that led to some poor performances (for someone so good) on the resume.
I had Hagler by maybe two/three rounds. Vito had great conditioning/workrate and Marvin took his foot off the gas and it cost him. Vito did not give Marvin any room to move and fought well in the trenches, Marvin did not use the angles in this bout that he could/should of and the rematch shows this, athough Marvin looked alot hungryer after this bout and maybe we are all better off from the draw that he received.
Watch it again as I did last year when I scored it.Even when Hagler boxed more he still outlanded Vito 4 to 1.This fight was not even close! So what if Vito became more aggressive and Hagler boxed more,he was still beating the crap out of Vito.
