Go for it guys. I reckon Hagler by KO between rounds ten and twelve. Thought I'd ask this because last night I watched Hagler vs Hearns and tonight I watched Hopkins vs Trinidad and this to me is a dream fight.. Also, bit of a bonus question here, what style of boxer was/is Bernard Hopkins?
this fight would be like watching two rams butt heads. hopkins would have more success in this matchup than i think most will give him credit for but i'll still lean towards hagler by decision. i don't see hagler ko'ing bhop.
Hopkins matches up very well with Hagler. He'd also be significantly bigger. Nobody is getting stopped here, these are two tough guys. Hopkins, over fifteen or twelve.
Far as I'm concerned, Hopkins is more proven than Hagler. Hopkins has beaten guys well in excess of 175 lbs, while in his 40s. He's a natural SMW/LHW who cut down to 160. If Hagler fights the way he did against Duran, Hopkins would tear him up.
i'll take hopkins pure best in 2001...physically still strong and a brilliant ring general i'll take hagler from tony sibson fight...incredible off the front and back front, near perfect jab and combinations i'll say hagler is stunned a bit by straight right hands from hopkins in the first 4 rounds, as hagler starts southpaw. he finds his rhythm though and alternates orthodox and southpaw, bouncing his way in and out behind the jab. hagler begins throwing straight lefts down the pipe as he closes the distance. hopkins slows the pace and tries for a more physical, close range fight where his size advantage and dirty tactics will help him. it works but hagler is hitting him with hard right hooks on the inside while hopkins head and short right uppercut score well for him. it's neck and neck going in the championship rounds but hopkins shades it Hopkins SD 12 UNLESS... hagler picks up the pace and wins the final 3 rounds on aggression and frequent left hands; hopkins slows the fight down and spoils but is too limited in offense to win Hagler SD over 15
Hopkins footwork allows him to create an angle to force the straight right hand home with suprising regularity.
I normally hate when people pick a SD type of decision in a hypothetical thread.....but I think this one is so close that it is warranted....if this fight could actually happen I think it would be so close that people would argue both sides of the outcome....I like Hopkins over 12...over 15 I am undecided.
I think it's safe to say Hopkins had a size advantage. He also performed better and for longer, but that doesn't necessarily translate accurately; some people would pick Michael Spinks over Archie Moore despite the gulf in longevity. Hagler always impressed me more - pound-for-pound, I believe he's that bit better. With arguably the most varied skill set of all the greats, he wouldn't be easy to read. I'm a fence sitter.
