I think this would have been a brawl, Tiger had 2 wins over Gene Fulmer , 2 wins over Jose Torres at 175 and Nino Benvenuti and was only stopped by Bob Foster in 82 fights. Thinking about Marvins first fight with Vito Antuofermo this goes the distance and Hagler could very well lose this.
The very underrated Dick Tiger would make this really tough for the perfectly rated Marvelous One. I'm going to give Tiger the nod in the first bout but I believe Marvin would figure out a way to win a rematch.
Depends on which Hagler shows up. If Hagler chooses to box on the backfoot and consistently jabs Tiger he wins by decision. The Hagler that came to rumble against Hearns would lose the slugging match against Tiger. Either way it goes it would still be a grueling and terrific fight.
This. It's Hagler's fight to lose, he is much faster and more mobile than the heavy handed but plodding Tiger. If he wants to mix it up with Tiger he's slugging with one of the few people that have a chance to sit him down. Why go there? I think Hagler would be far too smart for Tiger and box at range. You never know, though ...
I agree with this. Specifically I think Hagler would have been cerebral enough in his approach to realise boxing his way to a decision was the best possible outcome for him.
Hi Buddy. Interesting match up, not sure it has been done before, personally not seeing this as brawl, Hagler was too smart to choose that route, that said , even if he did I would still fancy him to win, I am steeped in admiration for Tiger, his indomitable will to win, tenacity, and a very solid chin, but Hagler has the same attributes, but was a fighter that could adapt, unlike the somewhat predictable Tiger, losing to Archer, Webb, Calhoun, Sandy, Greaves, and Giardello twice, doesn't fill me with confidence, fair play he reversed some, but if the guys mentioned could outbox Tiger, then Hagler would surely do the same, being heads above all of them, a plausible outcome the way I see the fight, would look very similar to the Briscoe encounter, Marvin utilising his boxing tools to the max, taking no risks, no ego in the ring, he would have known Tiger to be a dour, tough, figure, and boxed accordingly, can't see a scenario where Tiger has his hand raised, sorry... Enjoy your post amigo, interesting, polite, and on point, chat soon. stay safe.
Dick Tiger is just the type of fighter and style Hagler shined against. He's going to be their for Hagler to open his entire tool chest. Tigers going to fight aggressively, that would allow Hagler to counter, counter some more, switch stance wash and repeat. A paint job. I really don't believe this hypothetical would be as close as some think if both fighters are prime. Tigers style is what Hagler feasted on. While "Marvelous" wouldn't get the clean ko like Bob Foster, I see the ref having to stop the fight and Tiger or his corner not protesting it. If it does go to a decision, it wouldn't be close.
I was going to say that I could see Hagler fighting similarly to how he fought Briscoe, which I see Mike Cannon already mentioned above. Hagler uses his boxing skills, not his brawling skills to win this one, which would certainly go the distance.
