I was a fan of Mugabe (not as much as I was of Hagler) but he couldn’t clinch. Maybe he never learned or thought it was not macho. He had no answer for Hagler inside when he needed to slow the action. The dude was a warrior and I loved his balls to the wall style. Very exciting and he had fast hands and impressive power. No shame in losing to an ATG. I miss that era so much. Boxing is a shell of what it once was. Man I sound old but it’s true. It was so much bigger with casual fans. People talked about big fights, not just boxing geeks like many of us.
Maybe. Don't forget that Mugabe was 26 and 0 with 26 KOs before he fought a past prime Marvelous and was roughly handled for his troubles. So was that era inferior to the era in which GGG had his most dominating performances?
Hmm, good question. I’m 55 and of course want to say that era was better but I try to be fair. Hagler was literally at the end of his career at the time but he was still tough. He could have outboxed Mugabe even at this stage but if you challenged Marvin, he wasn’t going to back down. The fight with Tommy is a prime example. That’s why he’s one of my favorites. He didn’t take the safe route or let another man try to be the boss in the ring. Hagler let you know from the start that he was the boss. That said, he was a good boxer and had skills, especially in his prime. His opponents, Antiafermo (my spelling sucks and I’m too lazy to check) and Hamsho (both of whom he fought twice) were good but GGG beats both guys. Vito fought prime Hagler to a draw and he lost to two low ranked boxers early in his career. I never saw those fights and don’t think there is a tape. Also Hagler was only like 31 or 32 and past prime when he fought Mugabe but he already had like 66 pro fights and many wars by this time. At 33, Hagler was pretty much done. GGG is pushing 40 and still pretty good. I’d put my money on 33 year old GGG against 33 year old Hagler.
The loss to Bobby Watts is on film. The decision was controversial then and I can see why. Watts got lucky with the cards I thought. The loss to Willie Monroe wasn’t filmed, but that is regarded by everyone as a fair decision and clear loss for Hagler. He’s the uncle of the Monroe who lost to GGG.
He might have stopped Mugabi. I think Marvin was totally rusty in that fight and uninspired. And John was a strong guy who was not going to back up. Marvin was a unique fighter. He had a determination which was rare. He was a quiet guy who had a lot of pride and was going to take anything to win. His weakness was when guys boxed him and were defensive Marvin could be lulled into a slower pace and then find himself behind, and GGG was not defensive. And Marvin had a 5 inch reach advantage and could switch and he could punch. Remember 62 wins and 52 knockouts I think it was. GGG did not fight the guys Hagler did. I think Jacobs style troubles Marvin more than Golovkin. GGG would walk right to him and be broken down and stopped. In my mind it is easy to see.
Here's a question, how well would Hagler take those cork screw shots on top of his bald dome? This would be a great fight.
GGG was what 35? against Jacobs who is a huge middleweight and 37 against Derevyanchenko in retrospect Hagler was 33 years old against a former Welter in Leonard who'd been out the ring 3 years. As mentioned, I think Hagler grinds out a close tight decision but GGG in his pomp is giving him everything he can handle.
