Could Calzaghe even make 164? The lowest listed weight I've seen is 167. The catchweight of 164 would obviously give Hagler a clear edge; as well as a weakened Calzaghe there'd be no real need for Hagler to come in above his usual fighting weight. It's akin to SRL making Donny Lalonde fight at 167. So I guess from that point of view I'd see Hagler winning a clear decision at 164. At 168 though it would be a different fight.
Yes: while Calzaghe is very strong, he is not indominatable (as Bika and Hopkins showed) in this respect. I think Hagler was an exceptionally strong middleweight and Calzaghe draining down to catchweight would cause his strength to suffer a bit, while Hagler would be able to put on four more pounds of muscle easily. Basically, I think size would be a non-factor. Their strength will negate the other's and in terms of height I think Calzaghe's 2 inches are irrelevant, especially considering their respective reaches.
I saw haggard and beaten Hagler THUMB Juan Domingo Roldan who was giving Not-So Marvelous a serious a__ whuppin' like he needed, as well as cry like a loser when he so obviously lost really badly to Ray Leonard. He didn't come close to beating Duran in their 1st fight and was always boasting and complaining like James "Gut's Out" Toney. Guys like Hagler and Toney suck-- BIG TIME. This New Guy would mess-up Marvin.
Calzaghe would win. Too much speed and adaptibility. Haglar's great but the first Vito fight with a prime Haglar, as well as the Duran and Leonard fights, showed me a guy who is beatable by a guy of Calzaghe's abilities.
He's a dilemma, but he's been doing this against faded fighters. If guys like Hopkins and Jones were prime they'd have been nightmares comparatively for Calzaghe, given their much higher workrates, and in Jones's case, much better movement and greater speed, power, etc.
The Reid and Bika fights showed me that even a prime Calzaghe is beatable by a guy of Hagler's abilities.
Whilst Kevin put it a bit too strongly Hagler did have issues with Roldan, Duran, Antuofermo and Finnegan... Calzaghe is not going to be an easy fight.
Come on is there really any question here? Just look at the depth of Hagler's career. Even guys he beat on the way up like Sugar Ray Seales, Willie Monroe, Bobby Watts and Kevin Finnegan where light years ahead of most of the guys Calzaghe fought as champion. Hagler had problems with certain styles but this was because he fought a much higher level of fighter and a much greater variety of styles. How many current champs can go through Hearns to Mugabi to Leonard in successive defences? Calzaghe was never in a war so we know nothing about his heart under fire so we are left with a light hitting slippery guy with a suspect chin. OK maybe I am getting wrapped up in the Hagler legend and I watched and loved both fighters! But seriously we are talking about a certified legend who came through time and again against not just the best available opponents but other ATGs.
Hagler had wins over future champions at super middleweight (Fully Obel) and light heavyweight (Hearns) champions. Not sure Joe has the power to really dissuade him, although as a pure boxing natch it's a lot more interesting. Marv' just has more at his disposal. A tight and competitive one I imagine, Hagler on points. I'll let Joe C weigh in at 168 on the day and Marv' can come in either under bang on, or just over the middleweight limit, whatever he wants. Calzaghe was really a 'natural' light heavy and Hagler not a massive middle, but these men and these styles guarantee size won't really play that big a factor IMO.
