Instead of Alan Minter, What if Marvin Hagler went to England to challenge Champion Joe Calzahge? The Calzahge who just succesfully defended against Jeff Lacy. Fifteen rounds.
Hagler by UD. I think his southpaw jab and ability to effectively counter and use the jab against fighters who come forward wins him the day, though it would be a very exciting fight.
Hagler by unanimous decision. Depending on how the judges score the fight, Hagler wins by unanimous decision. Calzaghe is a busy fighter but his punches seem like "shoeshine overload" to me. I gave him a two point victory against Hopkins for his pressure and work rate, but I don't dispute those who had Hopkins winning. Hagler would definitely throw a lot more punches than Hopkins and wouldn't wait for counterpunching oppurtunites. I see Hagler dictating the pace of this fight with his jab, with the first rounds a close toe-to-toe battle.
Hagler by 9th - 11th round knockout. Hagler, unlike opkins has the balls to get stuck in there and Joe leaves his chin out. By the late rounds, he would get him
Hagler close UD I've changed my views regarding this matchup (as well as a Calzaghe-Hopkins prime matchup). Hagler holds the advantage from the outside because of his superior jab. People often say Hagler couldn't deal with speed and movers, but the timing he possessed and the jab would be key in neutralizing faster fighters. And trying to swarm him was a bad idea. On the inside, Hagler had shorter, more accurate/powerful punches, and most likely greater physical strength. He could also make Calzaghe fight backing up which isn't one of his best assets. I see him landing the cleaner punches throughout. Definitely would be a highly competitive fight. A thing that still has me uneasy in Hagler at 168; still would be a great fighter, but how much effectiveness and speed would he lose?
Calzaghe very comfortable UD, the 15 rounds would suit him and he scores shots rather than wasting time trying to properly punch people like Hagler.
Calzaghe is not a puncher so he couldn't hurt Hagler with his slaps. Hagler could hurt Joe though..... Hagler a comfortable 15 round UD.
Hagler's not a concussive puncher and Calzaghe has a solid chin so I'm not getting where you're coming from here. Hagler will win but not by KO.
Haglers shoots straighter more compact punches with better timing and greater damage. Calazage punches too wide and throws meaningless punches and always has, in exchanges he'll pay for this. Hagler UD 15 10-5 or 9-6 a late stoppage is a possibility Calazage has a shitty trainer in his dad, who is a great boxing conditioner but a lousy trainer who teaches nothing about timing or punch quality its all abotu quantity
Hagler had the ability to roll foward with strait southpaw punching and good power. Joe has the abilty with speed, leg movement and enough power to keep you at bay. I would not judge Calzage by his fight with Hopkins and I would not judge Hagler in his fight with Leonard. At 168 this fight would be closer than you think, I think Marvin had a corner that complimented him with the Petronelli's and even though Joe looks like his has some odd ends unpolished, you can not argue with success. In this fight both men may be force to fight a bit more out of there comfort zone and will to win and the opposing of the will over the pattern of the fight would loom large.
