52 stoppages in 67 fights. The guy was no Mike Tyson but he could punch hard and get a man out of there. If Hagler knocked out Calzaghe it wouldn't be the first solid chin he KOd. So what are you talking about??
Calzaghe UD on workrate. Hagler didn't have the timing to counter effectively against such fast fighter, as Leonard fight has shown very well. Ray was able to throw a 3-4 punches flurry before Hagler even realized he was being hit and tried to do something, he was too slow (younger version wasn't much faster).
I'll remind you that an over the hill Hagler landed only 15 fewer punches than Leonard did during their fight. A peak Hagler had enough speed to deal with Joe - don't be fooled by his final performance into thinking he was a slow guy. He certainly didn't lack timing either. Joe would be there for Hagler's jab. I see a late stoppage for Hagler.
I agree. And Ali had no answers to Jamaican fighters as was clearly shown in his poor performance against Trevor Berbick...
I'll remind you that an over the hill Calzaghe is still able to throw over 1000 punches during 12 rounds, something Leonard was never capable of doing. As can be seen from the fight vs Kessler, Hagler won't be able to do anything with his jab. Hagler also isn't physically strong enough to do something inside. Hagler had only average speed and reflexes even during his best years.
Calzaghe is over the hill? Kessler's jab is as good as Hagler's? Hagler wasn't physically strong enough for Calzaghe? Hagler's speed and reflexes were only average? dude, you got a right to your opinion but you must be on PCP
Yes, Calzaghe is over the hill already. He was 34 for Lacy, 36 for Kessler, 37 for Hopkins. Hagler was completely shot at 32 if we are to believe some of his nut-huggers. Kessler's jab is better than Hagler's ever been. Hagler didn't show much physical superiority over big 160-pounders, he will have none whatsoever against big 168-pounder (arguably natural 175-pounder who's cutting weight). Hagler never showed anything above average speed or reflexes. If he was beating someone, it was by his skills or toughness, it never was by quick punching.
Age ain't nuthin but a number ! Its down to number of fights, number of tough fights, and simply down to the individual. Joe has had some of his most impressive perfomances in the last 4 fights. He is NOT over the hill, and if he is past his best it certainly isn't in the same way that MH was past it by the time Sugar Ray got to him. Suffce to say I disagree with you on all of your above points. The most laughable one is the jab though. Classic. Go back and watch the Sibson, Hamsho I fights for a couple of good examples. Just say no, Senya !
Old-timers had ten times more fights than Hagler, and many times more tough ones than he, and they didn't use it as an excuse for poor showing. Hagler was slightly worse than his younger version, but not by much, because his style didn't depend so much on speed (which degraded somewhat also), and the fight with Leonard didn't require much toughness, where one could break up mentally. Ray was simply the better boxer of the two, plus the speed that allowed him to outpunch Hagler, Calzaghe would follow the same road, frequent flurries and either clinching or getting away before Hagler attempts to hit back. Watch some more of Kessler. Hagler wasn't even close to Mikkel in mastery of the jab.
You're comparing apples with oranges. Let's say for argument that Leonard bested Hagler (by the way, you keep saying Leonard outpunched him and got away - the fight stats are as follows: Leonard landing 306 punches to Hagler's 291 ...that's a difffernce of 15!!), Ray Leonard's style is a million miles away from Calzaghe's. Calzaghe would not be going down the road of Leonard, which was tons of foots movement and blinding handspeed. JC has neither the hand or footspeed or defence of SRL, despite what you may think. Also, Hagler was years past his best (82/83). To say he was only slightly past his best is ridiculous. Also, Hagler's style did not primarily depend on toughness. The jab thing's still got me laughing...!
Hagler was a good puncher but he wore men down rather than knocked them out cold. I'll give you a couple of examples, Duran and Roldan; Hearns knocked them both out cold in 4 rounds and 2 rounds respectively whereas Hagler took 10 rounds to wear down Roldan and was taken the distance by Duran. That's the difference between a solid puncher and a concussive puncher. Calzaghe has never been stopped so I see no reason why Hagler, not being a concussive puncher, would be the first to do so. Therefore Hagler UD 12.
