I think Hagler tops Cerdan on accomplishments. His Middleweight ledger is significantly richer, overall and, in my opinion, Hagler consistently beat better competition there. Cerdan spent a good while at 147, but of course has some big Middleweight names - collected post-war, nearing the end of his career - Williams, Abrams, Zale ; losing to LaMotta on what some might argue was a technicality. Was it a pure stoppage? I don't consider it, as such. Could Hagler stop him? It's a good question. My feeling with Hagler, as is the case with almost all of the speculative, fantasy middleweight match-ups that involve him, is that, if he doesn't break his opponent down, to the point of stopping him, the effort will have been enough to have taken it on the cards.
Marcel would be Hagler's best opponent and toughest test, going the distance much like the first fight with Vito
What slick, two fisted, fleet footed, masterfully skilled southpaw did cerdan ever fight to draw such a conclusion?
that's the wrong line of reasoning to use here. I see like the Roldan fight but without an injury interfering Would Hagler knock him out anyways? most likely he wouldnt
Cerdan does look good on film. Although except for Zale I really dont know much about who hes fighting on film. Zale was past it but Cerdan put on an impressive looking 2 fisted attack. He actually reminds me of an orthodox Papp. I'm going to go with Hagler by UD. Cerdan looks durable but Hagler could catch him and stop him just too hard to tell.
Not sure how durable cerdan was. Raadick had him down 3 times. Lamotta had him on rubber legs early in round 1. He took a couple big shots off a well past it zale who still could hit. Despite fighting very very few punchers, I think Cerdans chin was fair..but untested. against a two fisted, fast pinpoint assassin like a prime hagler, I could see him getting sliced and diced and broken down to a stoppage. Hagler was lethal when he had you hurt.
I'm not going to haggle over Hagler!!! (get it, haggle over Hagler) So I'm picking Hagler to win this one
This is what I have been saying for years. Cerdan is Hagler's best opponent, and could also be his hardest hitting opponent, or at least one of them. It depends on which Hagler shows up. Hagler I think wins on points here, but if he respects Cerdan too much, it could be a draw or a loss for Hagler.
If you only stopped once in 100+ fights, and an injured shoulder is a reason why, you can take a punch. Hagler isn't a true one punch KO type, he more of a combination guy who can hit. Was Hagler really hurt early vs Hearns or not?
Hagler. I can't think of one advantage that Cerdan had over Hagler. Hagler hit harder, was more skilled, bigger, faster and tougher.
Hagler was a very, very good middleweight puncher. He wasn't one shot because he didn't bomb and fight that style but when he let it go men were destroyed .. look at Seales, Hamani, Colbert, Minter, Obel, Hamsho, Roldan, Lee, Scypion ... Hagler was a monster puncher .. far more than a Monzon and I'd say better than Robinson at middleweight as well ..
I find it misleading when some claim he was not a big banger and put him into a boxer puncher category like a Ali or Holmes .. when he planted and went to swat he crushed guys ..
