Hagler was very similar to fellow box punchers with high ko % Julio Cesar Chavez and Golovokin. All three hit hard but were not true one punch punchers. The reason there ko % was that they were underrated in their boxing skills and when throwing there punches they were very economical and pin point accurate with their punches. Hence the horrific facial damage they inflicted on their opponents.
I respect your opinion but completely disagree .. how many crushing KO's do you need to be a big puncher ? I'm interested in hearing your ten middleweight champs that hit harder ?
That was the perfect punch , a one off .. he did not do it again in multiple fights with Fullmer. I think Hagler was a bigger hitter at 160 than Robinson.
Respect yours too HG. I'll throw a few up when i have time, probably tomorrow. Will include contenders too tho as limiting the list to champions makes it far too constricted and not a true reflection.
Kind of my point .. there are guys who could crack but were otherwise limited .. my point is rating the middleweight champs , en who had the skill to win a title .. anyway as always look forward to your thoughts JT.
Who did Hagler knock out? Colbert a hyped up average fighter Scypion another average fighter, and Hamani a super welter.Nearly all his stoppages were tko's a lot on cuts eg Minter was never off his feet I didn't say there are ten champs that hit harder , just that Robinson did. Since you've asked though I'll take a stab at it. Ketchel Steele Hostak Turpin Valdez Zale Robinson Graziano Golovkin Fitzsimmons Monzon One for luck.
Add Nigel Benn in there too - not the greatest boxer but hits harder than Hagler for me. Would people take a pre-Watson Eubank as having a harder punch than Hagler? I do like Cerdan but Hagler would drown him much like a tsunami would Michael Phelps - as good as you are, this would be above your station IMO.
The list is a leap of faith .. Turpin, Graziano ( talk about feasting on welters ), GGG ( talk about who'd he knock out ) , Monzon ( flat out no ), Zale (comparable) , Ketchel ( the definition of leap of faith ), Robinson ( an exceptional puncher but at middleweight not what he was at welter but also impacted by age so hard to gage ) .. I'd give Fitz for sure .. Hostak and Steele were punchers for sure so right in there .. as far as who did Hagler beat, if you don't know or agree that's not up to me to convince you. If he beat no one where do you rate him at middle ?
I've always considered Hagler to be a consistently hard puncher, with either hand; not necessarily a naturally concussive puncher - more one that would hurt you to some extent with every blow. This is not to say he couldn't deliver game-changing punches. He was capable of delivering some real power; primarily, with the left hook and the straight right.
