I know this match-up was mentioned a few times in KO Magazine during that time, but I don't think it really was ever close to being made.

I wonder if Hagler could have pulled it off?

Hagler couldn't have pulled it off.

He knew it, that's why he didn't try.

Spinks by knockout. He's bigger, stronger, and hits harder than anybody Hagler had ever faced.

Hagler was a smallish Middleweight; Spinks a big Light Heavyweight. Why would Hagler take the fight, when he could fight Hearns et al for similar, if not, better money?

Hagler fighting as a southpaw would run into the Spinx Jinx.

If he fights conventional....then Spinx's left hook and uppercut finds home.

Plus Spinx is 5 inches taller with a an inch greater reach.

All too much for Hagler to overcome.

I had always thought of this fight as a Spinks victory, which I'm sure is why the Hagler camp wasn't too serious about it happening. Still Marvin was such a good fighter in his prime I'd have a hard time seeing anyone blow him out. I think Spinks by UD.

Spinks was too big and cagey for Hagler.... Spinks by 10th round TKO...... Hagler on his feet, but bleeding and beaten...

might be closer than anyone thinks . Hagler did better against taller fighters than shorter fighters and when he had a real challenge he tended to get himself worked up more and do better, like against Hearns. He could not rush Spinks like he did Hearns since Hearns was moving up, and Hagler would be moving up here, but I think his jab and experience could do well against Spinks. Better than people think. And Hagler would have looked big at 175. If this fight were made today, it would be at a catchweight which would give Hagler an even bigger chance.

I agree with you. Marvin was a natural middleweight who would have lost some of his effectiveness taking on Spinks.

I wonder if folk are comparing the rampaging Hagler of the Hearns fight or the fluent box-fighter counter-punching Hagler of the Sibbo masterclass?

I can't see marv making any sort of dent in the jinx but the Marv of the Sibbo fight would give a great account of himself providing the jinx played ball that is & pressed Hagler. But Spinks had all the tools in abundance & it could be the case where Hagler gets stopped more than likely late on cuts.

I reckon Marvin would see the fight out. Unless,as you say,he gets cut.
